when i start my computer a error comes which reads: VMM32.VXD IS REQUIRED TO RUN WINDOWS.
IF YOU DONT HAVE THE FILE ON PATH YOU MAY NEED TO REINSTALL WINDOWS.
HOW DO I FIX THE PRBLEM?

How to Restore a System file in Win 98
If you have get an error message indicating a system file is not
working and you want to replace it with a good copy from your Win98 CD,
you can use the System File checker Tool. SFC is located in the
Tools menu of System Information. You can find it by Start> Programs>
Accessories>System Tools> System Information> Tools> System file
checker. An easier way to get to SFC is by:
Click Start>Run
in Open: type "SFC" without quotation marks
Click OK or press Enter key
In System file checker dialog box, you can see two radio buttons."
Scan for altered files" is to Scan your File System and verify
if they have been altered or corrupted. If you click the Settings buttons in this dialog box, in a new
dialog box you get a number of options. In this System File checker settings dialog box, an IMPORTANT
cluster of radio buttons, is Backup file before restoring. I
have selected Prompt before backup in that cluster. You may select
Always backup before restoring if you like. You will see a Default
backup location there .You can change it to a different folder by
clicking Change button.Make your backup file option before starting the File Extraction
The bottom radio button Extract one file from installation disk
is the one you are interested in for file extraction.Click Extract one file from installation disk radio button
In the "specify the system file you would like to restore" box,
type the name of the file Example. WSOCK32.DLLClick Start
In the popup window "Backup file", "If you want to backup
the existing file before overwriting it, specify where you want to save
the file, and then click OK. If you don't want to backup this file ,
click skip", browse and select a different folder or use the default
folder but you should click OK.In the Extract file dialog box, in Restore from : box,
type "D:\Win98" without quotation marks if the Drive letter of your
CD-ROM drive is "D"Insert your Win98 CD in your CD-ROM drive
Click OK

vmm32.vxd is a very special file and is unique to your system. It is created when you install Windows. As far as I know, the only fix is to run setup again.

DO NOT reload vmm32.vxd using SFC.
The file is uniquely constructed at windows installation time. The one on the CD is only a shell.
As well, you should not copy it from another PC or from the net. Now, what did you install/uninstall just prior to the problem happening?
Do you have a uMax scanner?See this note on trouble shooting. Most of the time the file is there and it could just be the path that is wrong.
Given you haven't already screwed it up using John's instructions!!

Agreed, the instructions John gave you SHOULD NOT BE USED. vmm32.vxd requires a new installation. To keep your windows files & not have to reinstall drivers, boot into c: prompt, rename your windows dir winbak or something. Then, run Win98 setup and install new copy of windows into c:\windows. All your drivers will be in c:\windows\inf , \system32, \system, or \options\drivers\cabs
Good luck!

I see that I was in such a hurry to try and post, that I forgot the link.
