Comment:

I have two hard drives. Right now I am running off the older one with 98 because my new one with xp has a virus. When I try to access Outlook Express, it searches for the file msimn.exe and tells me it cannot be found. i went into program files for Outlook, and the file is completely gone. Microsoft refuses to help me because its 98, and i couldn't find a place to download it. Can anybody here help me?

If you have any problems with file let us know what IE & OE versions you are using (from help/about) because the file version can vary.

Msimn.exe should be in the 'Outlook Express' folder, not in 'Outlook'.

What was the full name (with extension) of the file which was sent?

If it was a zip file you have to "extract" it to C:\Program Files\Outlook Express

If it was renamed to some other extension then just send it direct to the above location then change its name to .exe

Don't worry, you won't mess it up. It was almost certainly changed to get it past any server or outlook express filters.

Glad you got it figured out. Derek, you're right. I changed the file extension.

What version of Internet Explorer are you running?

#8 might be your best bet. In any event, not knowing your IE/OE version means we can't be certain we are sending you the right file versions.

It might be worth downloading IE6 SP1 in full, as MS support for W98 ceases on 11 July and IE7 (for XP) is on the way. It can then be burnt onto a CD. The procedure is given here:
IE6 SP1 FULL DOWNLOAD

You should install the latest OE cumulative update which contains the files that you are having trouble with so far (msoe.dll and msimn.exe).

I think these problems vary with software mix or what you do to the system.

I've had various versions of IE/OE on here since 1999 and they've been fine. Last reformat 12 Nov 1999, all nice and stable.

The situation smells to me like technicalstoner may have removed or botched up the latest OE update which left him with a couple of the highest version possible files on hand which then would not work without the rest of the complement of files and could not be overwritten by re-installing ie6.00 SP1 or fixable by any other method except to re-apply the last OE cumulative.

The OE files in particular go in a couple of different folders from which they also need registering in, so even downloading the correct version is often not enough. I prefer to let the OE cumulative update do all that for me. I'm finding that many who complain about IE/OE have never tried re-installing it correctly as fix and that's the first thing I do at the first sign of any glitch. Takes all of 3 minutes with no loss of data at all, but how can one fight common misconceptions? IE/OE work fine here, my Win98 is *very* stable, the list goes on and on....

Yep Lee. I agree too that getting the file versions right for IE/OE is paramount. For that matter correct/suitable file versions are an important factor all round with computers I reckon.

Found this posting while troubleshooting a similar problem. Thought I'd throw in my $.02 worth, if that's OK...
Coiuldn't install IE updates, becasue the latest version was already instralled, and updates won't reinstall. ON XP SP2, the only way to reinstall IE/OE is to reapply SP2. Tried it - twice. The C:\Program Files\Outlook Express folder remained totally empty.
Strangest thing I ever saw. Tried deleting the folder and reapply that SP - no difference. It didn't even recreate the folder.
In desperation, I copied the Outlook Express folder from my PC to this one (figured, Why not?). Believe it or not, it worked!
Tried two different spyware scanners and an up-to-date AV scanner - the system is clean as can be. Nothing found at all.
As much as I've worked with Windows and with OE/IE, I've never seen anything so simple that wouldn't fix itself with the application of the recommended corrective measures.
Anyway, that's my input. Thanks for all yours...
