Comment: Please help. This is my last option to fix the computer. When I start my computer I get the message that the win.com file is missing or currupt and windows cannot continue to load. Please, please, please can someone email me with the file that I need. I have tried to look on my boot disk, but can't find it there. If anyone could just send me the file I need, I would be very thankful. Thanks, Jennifer

Reply: (edit)You extract win.cnf from your W95 CD and then rename it to win.com See here: Microsoft ArticleThis way you will get the correct version. Shout if you need a hand with DOS extract. D

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the info Derek, but I can't find my w95 cd. I've even searched the net for the file that I need, but can't find it there either. Any suggestions other than buying another copy of w95? Jennifer

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the file Derek. Now when I copy and rename it to my computer, I get a message that says invalid parameter win.com. I guess I'm just fighting a losing battle. Any other suggestions? Jennifer

Reply: (edit)We seem to be on our own. I'll see if I can get some others to pop by, rather than thrash around with this. I would normally suggest loading W95 on top but obviously that's not an option. There is a vague possibility that some kind soul has copied the W95 CD onto your machine. Do a "Find" for *.cab while you are waiting. You will probably find plenty of .cab files. If you find a stack with W95 as the start of their names we are in business, so shout back. D

Reply: (edit)Start the computer. Before the OS starts to load start tapping the F8 key. You should get a boot menu. Choose 'command promt only'. At the c:\> prompt type: dir/p and enter. Scroll down until you find 'command.com'. Post back the date associated with command.com. This will help in determining what version of 95 you have. Then maybe we can find the win.com for that version.

Reply: (edit)Derek, I have the 95_OSR25 CD copied on my system. I've extracted the win.cnf and did the rename to win.com. I've uploaded it to my webspace. (In my message header.) HTH (Posted as well in "Damsel in distress")

Reply: (edit)Thx all. If it makes Jennifer feel any better I nearly wrecked my W98SE machine experimenting with win.com but found the way out of my self inflicted problem was to take the +s out of attributes. The win.cnf file I sent Jennifer was for the first CD edition of W95. I don't know what version of W95 she is/was running. Jennifer Certainly the first step is to try to determine the exact W95 version you have (see para 2 of #6). If applicable download the one for 95_OSR25 from Dan's website. We'll need your info first. If all else fails ensure that the win.com attribute is not set to "system":- There are two ways to do this. Tap F8 while booting and get to the start menu. Select "safe mode". If this works it's like a poor and slow version of Windows. Type winfile in the Run box and you will get something that looks like a messy version of Windows Explorer. Find the win.com file in c:\windows and highlight it. Then go to File/Properties and makes sure there is no tick in "system". The other way is to do it in DOS but see if you can get into Safe Mode first (it will be useful to us all if you can). D

Reply: (edit)Thx BOB but that turned out to be an extract from the MS link in my #1. The only addition was to look for a virus, but this would have to be invoked from DOS somehow. D

Reply: (edit)Thx beansoup - useful info. I've only one W95 CD and the date alone tells me that the copy I sent Jennifer is earlier than yours. I don't know the date of Dan's (downloading it gives it today's date). Maybe Dan could check because I suspect it's the same as yours, the file size lines up. We'll have to see what Jennifer says about her system now. I have to admit that it's tempting to suggest Jennifer searches around to see if she can get a cheap W95 CD and load it in over the top. Happy to carry on but progress seems slow. D

Reply: (edit)If all fails, Jennifer I think I can supply (free - I 'should' have several) a '95OSR2 CD (with license number etc.) - just need to know where you is... If you need the CD post here to that effect and I'll email you (via the address you have linked to our tag here) and arrange it that way. Meanwhile: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000021.htm http://www.windows-help.info/hd_wincom.htm http://members.aol.com/axcel216/newtip3.htm all three links discuss it, and offer the same solution.

Reply: (edit)Hello all. My version is 95_OSR25 which is 95 C. The dates on the cd files are; 11/26/97 12:16 PM and the dates on the files in the 03 cab are; 8/24/96 11:11 AM. So it appears we have all three versions to offer Jennifer.

Reply: (edit)Sorry for taking so long to post back. I have downloaded the win.com file from Dan's webspace and copied it to my computer. That seemed to fix my win.com problem. However, when windows loaded I got new messages: Error starting program - file missing tapi32.dll. Scandisk.exe not found. Run.dll not found. That is when I got frustrated and just turned it off. I was able to find out the date of the command.com file. It is 8-24-96 and the size was 90,000 something if I remember correctly. If trvlr could supply me with a cd that would be great. Maybe I can just reload w95 on the computer and that will fix everything. Thanks for all the help so far. I really appreciate it. It's nice to have somewhere to go for help. Jennifer

Reply: (edit)Jennifer: I've emailed you to establish a more private/solid contact, prior to sending you a CD. If you don't get the email in the next 24/48 hrs. post back here to that effect and we'll try again. Perhaps also use the "message to posters" option on this forum to confirm the email has arrived; and check your messages here too?
