Hi

I have Win 98 SE dual booted with Win XP Home Edition and I cannot access either OS. The message "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:WindowsRoot\system32\hal.dll. Please reinsatll a copy of the above file" appears on boot up. I have used my startup disk using "sys c:" also cant enter "safe mode" either. Ihave ran a virus check and all seems ok. Can you please provide me with some guidance ?

Would be grateful

Jack Doyle

Hi Jack.
Try starting up with a boot disk, then at the prompt type
fdisk /mbr this will refresh your master boot record. Give that a try, then try a reboot. Have a nice day Jack.

Here's some info:

If that doesn't help, you should be able to download it here:
