i have what seems to be a big problem. ihave a compaq armada 1200. when i try to boot up, the computer displays these 3 messages, respectively:
1790 - Disk 0 Error
162 - System Options Not Set
missing operating system

how can i fix this? i cannot boot with the compaq setup and diagnostics cd like i could before. ditto, with any other boot disks. i hope i'm not screwed. thank you in advance for any help anyone can offer. pbs.

The first thing I'd do is to shut down
then unplug the system.
Wait awhile plug back in then restart.

then if that doesn't do anything try going into the BIOS and set to failsafe settings.

or you might want reset the bios with a cmos jumper.

How old is this system?

If you don't have any experience with resetting the cmos jumper get some help.

And if you can get free help from Compaq call them.

To access the BIOS on a Compaq, press F10 when you see the flashing cursor (or is it cursing flasher?) in the upper right of the screen at the start. It sounds like either a bad CMOS battery, or else equipment failure (fdd or hdd). Usu you are given the setup option (F2) once these 'errors' are detected.

Usually the BIOS will give you the option of continue (F1) or setup (F2).
Might try holding the F10 key throughout the startup until you get the 'stuck key' warning - that may do it. Do you suspect that the battery is dead? Does the hard drive spool up, drive lights come on for it and the floppy? Have you done any work on the board recently - sometimes there is a 'clear CMOS' jumper that may have been loosened. Possibly disconnecting the floppy *might* force the setup screen.
