The "internet options" icon is missing from the control panel. I reinstalled Win95 from the CD several times to no avail. The inetcpl.cpl file is in C:/Windows/System file. I've copied this one and also one from a newer computer, deleted the old file and then separetly replaced both the old and then the new one, but it appears that the control panel just refuses to open this particularly named cpl file. In this process I tried to use sfc.exe and the tweakiu programs but was not able to find either one of these programs anywhere. The modem connects to my IP and I can open my browsers but, I think, I can't connect to the internet because of this missing option. I have no utility programs running. Help!

Hi Wayne,
I wonder how can you run SFC from Win95?
However, if you manage clean install for Win9x (Win95 OSR), it will automatically install IE and the link will appear in Control Panel.
Or, you can try to install IE from disc, preferable version 4.0 or above which usually freely available from bonus CD from some computer magazines.

Hello Hermawan
Thanks for your quick reply. My IP support person said the same thing, that IE should automatically install when I reinstalled Win 95 from my disc, but it never would.
I don't know what's meant by "clean" install or the letters "OSR". The disc I use is the one I used to upgrade from 3.1, years ago and it says MS Windows 95 Upgrade on it.
Is IE not on this version or am I doing something wrong???
Thanks again!

Just on the off chance, try this...
In Windows Explorer, go to C:\Windows and find CONTROL.INI
Open it with Notepad, and look at the
[don't load] section at the top
Does it have an entry for
inetcpl.cpl=no
Delete that line if you see it there

Win95 upgrade did not come with ie. It was seperate. Find a copy of the full version and look at the cd. It should have a dir for ie. Run install from there. Or boot from floppy and delete you win.com and install the full version on your hard drive.

Thanks Krystyna & G-Man
Looked in the control.ini file but the only cpl(s) were some other named ones under (don't open). I was hoping.Looks like the next thing to do is find a cd with IE.
Remains a mystery why all the other cpl files open by right-click and using "Open with control panel" but one with that name won't, even after being replaced with a working one off another computer.
It's been a learning experience.

I just learned about control.ini from Krystyna's post. I didn't need it, but will file it for future reference. Thanks!
If "Internet Options" doesn't work in Control Panel, does it work when you open IE, select Tools/Internet options from there?

During this process of reinstalling Win95, my current IE browser became unavailable, icon gone-won't open from the exe file-won't reinstall because it says the needed uninstall program is missing, so I don't have access to the tools option.I have an old Netscape and IE that open, remenants of Win3.1 that remained on my hard drive, that I have used in emergencies in the past. I can access one of the internet option boxes, but it must refer to it's own cpl file.
This time neither one of these is a source of rescue.

OSR is Operatins System Release. Windows 95 had 2 major releases.. it's first one, which wasn't out for too long, and the second one, which was referred to as Win95 OSR2, or as it's sometimes called, just "95OSR"
If you can open Internet Explorer, then you can access the same thing by clicking Tools-Internet Options that you can access from the Internet applet in control panel, as RM stated above.
If you can get onto the internet, go to Microsoft.com, or even better, if your OS has it in the start menu, click on the Windows Update link. Then you can download versions of Internet Explorer, and with that new install, it should rebuild the lost icons.

Thanks for explaining OSR.The problem is that the browser, even if it is open on the desktop, acts as if it doesn't see the modem, even when the modem is connected. It tries and then the message that "the program couldn't find the address for www.***" appears.
Although I can open "options" from the menu bar and get to the internet options box with it's tabs, there is no connection tab where the dial-up settings - IP can be entered or appear. The newer versions have those settings located there but in this version (3.0.1068 Beta) it must have to be entered someplace else. Perhaps directly into a Winsocks setting?
Thanks for your interest and response.

Better wait for another poster to back me up on this one, but:
I believe AOL uses an integrated version of Internet Expolorer. What if grabbing one of those free AOL CD's that you can get at any minimart, your mailbox, or your local dump, and install it on your system... would that upgrade Internet Explorer to a more recent version, and give it the needed overhaul? YOu wouldn't need to sign up for AOL or anything, once it's done with the install, you can uninstall it, and it should leave IE behind.
Just a thought? never tried it, but seems like it might be a fast way of getting your IE reinstalled. But again, I'd wait and see if other posters agree with the philosophy before trying it...

That's an idea, and off hand, I don't see what would be lost by trying it. I received so many over the years, now just to find one.
Thanks

The source of all the error messages and problems, in my case, was that every time I reinstalled Win 95 I kept the newer versions of the files that the pop-up windows recommended doing. After letting Win95 install the original files, no more conflicts and error messages. The most trouble seemed to be caused by the newer commctl32.dll file.
