Try typing DIR at the C:prompt...
Does it show any files on the C: drive? You could also try typing FDISK then click(enter)choose Y click (enter) and choose 4. (Drive information)

i restored regs from like 3 days ago but the same C:\> still comes up
and scandisk was unable to perform because i do not have an extended memory drive "make sure i have himen.sys"

wow i never knew computers could be this frustrating
any other ideas?

lou
thanks it now confirms that im missing
himen.sys from my computer
how do i restore/get this file?

Yeah PC's can sure be fustrating...LOL
Try Booting and holding down the control key..That should give you the menu..
Choose 4. Step by step confirmation
Choose (N) to all except Himen.sys..Choose (Y) for Himen.sys...It should boot when your done...See if that helps...beansoup

beansoup
thanks for the help
now i know im issing the himen.sys file from my computer
hehe im now tryin to find out if theres any way i can acquire that missing file.....
=)
ck

I wonder why it's saying himen.sys ?
It should be himem.sysA windows install takes less than an hour and you won't lose any data.

lou
SORRY LOL
its himem.sys my bad :( hope it didn't cause any confusion
u think i should re install windows? i don't think i still have the cd though...
i saw in a forum where people could send u the himem.sys file
is that possible?
but that forum was from like march so nobodys on it anymore
cheers
ck

lou, ck,
Typo's...LOL
Thanks for the imput..Your suggestion should do the job, but I didn't know exactly what the problem was..Just fishin'The reinstall over the top should do it..beansoup

beansoup
thanks for everything man
at least we found the prob
now i gotta find the windows 98 cd
thanks again
take it ez
ck

ck,
My pleasure
If the machine your using for this forum has win98 on it, the himem.sys file is in C:\windows folder...Copy it on a floppy if you have to...
Peace
beansoup

HI all Himem.sys should go to the c:\windows
for win98se not sure about fe.
if that does not fix problem you may have bad memory.to see if you have it at dos prompt type
dir c:\windows\himem.sys if it list it you have it.

TopFarmer,
Hi, Assuming ck has to copy himem to his drive, what is the command line using the extract.exe?
Lou thanks for the spellcheck...LOL
beansoup

beansoup
thanks i have a question
now that uve sent me the himem.sys file, i download it onto a diskette? and then? how do i run that in my win98 that won't even start up? :pck

Beansoup, he said he doesn't think he has the win98 CD. So he can't extract it.
To copy it from a floppy type
copy a:\himem.sys c:\windows

beansoup
haha no i got a xp on this com
so yes i was wondering how i can put the file into...win98 hehe
=P
ck

ck,
You copy the file when you have the C: prompt..Papa2 gave you the line to type in..
copy a:\himem.sys c:\windows
Let us know how you make out...
Thanks for the input papa2
beansoup

papa2
now that copied the himem.sys file into windows
i tried rebooting from hard disk and it still shows the C: command prompt!
arghh
ck

ck,
Your going to have to find that cd win98, and reinstall windows, like lou suggested..
beansoup

OK thanks yall for all the help
i learned quite some commands haha
im retarded in Dos
thanks so much
have a good night
peace
=]
ill try to figure this thing out somehow

Jeez, should have thought of this earlier.
try typing
path
it should say
path=c:\windows;c:\windows\command

At "C" prompt, type:
Edit msdos.sys
Path to WinDir should be C:\Windows
Under "Options" make sure:
BootGUI=1

hey dave01
ok i typed
edit msdos.sys
but its a read-only file
how do i check options?
i don't know how to navigate around this blue screen i have in front of me right now. :p im retarded lol
all is see is;SYS
cheers m8

Dave01s plan will do it.
Actually way back earlier, booting from a win98 bootable floppy and typing
sys c:
should have fixed it. I don't understand why it didn't.
But to get rid of `read only', go back to DOS and type
attrib msdos.sys -s -r

On second thought recreating the msdos.sys file will be too much work.
Try booting from the win98 floppy and type
sys c:
again

lou
should i try the whole thing over? i mean booting from the floppy and everything?
okay starting OVER
im gonna go download a startup disk from
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htmwhich one should i choose? cuz im wasn't sure which one my computer is so i chose the first one ...
okay ppl guide me thru this pleeease
bear with me
thanks
ck

At "C" prompt, type:
attrib msdos.sys -R -S
edit msdos.sysMove cursor using arrow keys.
After editting file, press alt F. Save file and exit.

ck,
I might add that the bootdisk you download is an executable file.. ( bootdisk98.exe )
You have to execute it on the xp machine and save it to a floppy...Just a reminder..beansoup

Dave01, all he has in msdos.sys is `sys'
So he would have to create the whole file instead of just editing the windows directory line. That's a lot of work. If what he is gonna try doesn't work. It would be a lot easier to email him a msdos.sys file.

haha thanks
i actually did execute it thankswell the windows 98 startup disk is gonna come tomorrow hopefully
how do i run that disk if i have it now?
so that i don't have to bother yall again tomorrow
thanks
ck

lou
i didn't make myself clear
i won't even attempt to download one of the 5 bootup disks they have on the site, cuz i don't remember which version mine is.
my dads gonna bring the original win98 cdrom home tomorrow and ill reinstall it then
my question is how do i do that?
oh man im retarded at prompts,
is there a site where i can learn them? so i don't have to be asking every 2 seconds.
thanks man
ck

CK, you have a simple problem. It's not necessary to reinstall windows.
I will mail you the msdos.sys file.
When you get it, put it on a floppy.
Go to the failing system, boot to c: and type
attrib msdis.sys -s -r (if you haven't done it earlier)
Then type
copy a:\msdos.sys c:\
then type
attrib msdos.sys +s +rYou should be good to go when you reboot

ck,
We are back to response #2...LOL
Start with the win98 bootdisk,( if that's the version of the Cd.)If not get the bootdisk that the same as your CD version...Insert the bootdisk, choose With cd rom support...You will end up with that wonderful C: prompt..LOL Type in Setup...Windows will ( should ) load...( If it reads the CD-rom )lou, You can't think of everything...LOL Your too busy with the hard stuff...LOL
beansoup

lou
i tried the attrib
it still doesn't work
the thing is IM NOT SURE which version of 98 mine is so i may have been using the wrong boot disk the whole time
that is why for me to save the trouble of tryin all of them
im gonna use the windows cd disk
im not a computer genious so
pardon me :s
but really where can i learn the prompts for dos?
thanks

No CK, we are not there. We are `not' trying to install windows. we are trying to do a
sys c:
which will restore the msdos.sys file.

im gonna try one last time
using the boot disk then typing sys c:
then putting the msdos.sys in and do the attrib thing
wish me luck the last time im gonna try...:s

sighhh it didn't work
wat lou told me
most likely im using the wrong bootup disk
watever though, the cd roms coming tomorrow so we'll see wat happens
THANKS BEANSOUP, LOU, DAVE01 n PAPA2 for helping out here
thanks a lot guys
really appreciate it
im tired, its 12:15 am now...gotta go sleep
got school tomorrow
peace yall
see u later...today
lol
ck

Night ck
lou, question:
msdos.sys and himem.sys are on the bootdisk..Shouldn't they have loaded when ck booted with the bootdisk?beansoup

The version of msdos.sys on the bootdisk is different than the version of msdos on the hard drive when windows is installed on it. You've got the floppy version on your hard drive. That's why it's only going to the c:\> prompt.
When you do a 'sys c:' from a bootdisk the system files are refreshed on the hard drive. If msdos.sys is already on the hard drive, the 'sys' command doesn't change it. If it's not there (or maybe is a different OS version) then 'sys' copies the version on the bootdisk to the hard drive. For whatever reason that's what happened in your case.
The contents of the windows version of msdos.sys on the hard drive is fairly consistent. You should be able to copy that file from another computer and overwrite the version on your hard drive. It needs to be the same OS version (first or second edition) as you've got installed on your drive. Someone may be able to email you theirs.
First you'll need to do the:
attrib -s -h -r c:\msdos.sys
as recommended above. Then with the correct version of msdos.sys on a floppy disk type:
copy a:\msdos.sys c:\
and enter. It'll ask if you want to overwrite the file on your hard drive. Answer yes. Then when it's copied type:
attrib +s +h +r c:\msdos.sys
and enter.
You have to do it that way because msdos.sys has to be at a certain place on the drive. If you copy over the existing version then that guarantees it's in the right place. If instead you were to delete the one on the HD first and then copy the correct version to the HD, the file could be copied anywhere.

Thank God you finally showed up Dave! I couldn't believe over *sixty responses* for a simple problem like this. ;>)
I mean no offence to anyone, it's just I don't see this very often. I was about to reply and found DAVEINCAPS response aptly stated. Everyone was missing the -h attribute, which must be cleared in order to find the msdos.sys file. As well, sys c: will not replace himem.sys. Good luck.

Thanks, when he posted that his msdos.sys only contained ';sys' I knew what had happened.
The sys command can be confusing because of how it handles msdos.sys. A person can sys a HD that already has a good msdos.sys and it will still boot up to windows. That leaves the impression that the sys command transfers the windows version of msdos.sys when in fact it didn't alter that file at all.
The himem.sys problem may clear up too once the correct msdos.sys is installed. I can't be positive but I think that attempting to start windows by typing 'win' doesn't let himem.sys load if you don't have the correct msdos.sys. We'll have to wait and see what happens when he get the msdos.sys problem fixed.

daveincaps
thanks for your advice
now my computer is willing to bootup haha
but theres this other problem
it scans the registry when i start up and it says it found an error in the system files and restored a backup of the file to fix the problem. And then it tells me to restart. I do that and the same message keeps coming up.
What should i do ?
ck

I know that bad RAM can cause that to happen. Bad RAM can also prevent himem.sys from loading thus giving the 'missing himem.sys' message.
I'm sure there's other causes for that also but that's the one I have personal experience with. If you can, swap the memory with other sticks. Or, if you have more than one stick of RAM, take one out and see if you still get the problem. If so put the stick back in and remove another. Hopefully this will isolate the bad one.
If you still get the problem you may want to start a new thread with that particular problem to get other opinions.
