recently i noticed my d: drive was getting a bit full. no surprise it's not large (2.2 gigs) so went to work on clearing it up a little. not too hard since it's largely used to store mp3's and whatnot so i did away with all but 570 megs of files but found i only have 700 megs of space remaining still. last i checked 700+570 didn't equal 2,200. i thought maybe i had a virus so i scanned both drives (found a worm on the c: drive) but nothing to explain the disapearance of almost a gig of space on the d: drive. i checked to see if somehow i had an unordinary amount of slack and found more confusing numbers...
821 files 574,649,689 bytes
152 directories 575,457,280 bytes allocated
748,341,248 bytes free
2,433,351,680 total disk space, 69% in useput simply, problem: almost 1 gig of hard drive space is unaccounted for.

Have you tried the Disk Cleanup option? (I think this is on Win 98) You can find this if you -
right click the start button, explore, right click your C drive, Properties and choose the Disk Cleanup option. Windows should then look through your pc and find unused files such as Temp files etc - this might clear up a bit more space.
You could also try scandisk and do a slow and boring thorough scan - as you might have some bad clusters on your hard drive.
THESE ARE ONLY SUGGESTIONS - I am by no means a computer expert and I would wait to see what one of the more clever people say before doing this!!!!

;you said that this is your D drive correct?
try enabling "view hidden files". see if there is a hidden file somewhere on the drive. It could be the pagefile (virtual memory) is using the drive. I have my D drive setup that way.
boot into safe mode and check the drive again to see if any files (hidden) appear on it also.
If you still cant find anything, copy the 500+ mb of data to the C drive and reformat that D drive. (fdisk it first)... I would suggest doing this in safe mode.. quicker and virus checker wont slow things down.

Exit to dos and at the c:\windows> prompt type:
chkdsk
and return. The first line tells the total disk space. The next 4 or 5 (depending if you have any bad spots on the HD) will add up to that number and tell how that space is used.

and the best way to clean temporary internet files is in internet explorer. Manually deleting the folders is not the way. In internet Explorer click Tools, Internet options, Delete files.

you need to go back to school!
files=575mb used
dir=575mb used
not used=748mb
totol=1.898mb
you want more space delete some of the directories!!
