at the boot up of this machine, i get the missing file in system.ini error,,the ones missing are vredir.vxd and dfs.vxd....then just before the background comes up it comes up with this error missing msnp32.dll something to do with microsoft networking protocol....i have a usb eternet adapter installed for dsl...i think i have the drives installed but its not pulling an ip address....any suggestions for the best way to repair

Same problem happens to me someitmes. I've found that by removing your ethernet adaptor and all affilated protocls and then re-installing them tends to solve this problem.

i dont know if the files missing at startup have anything to do with the adapter problem...amy good way to reinstall missing files....i can just do a reinstall of teh os,,,but i need to save one of the programs on the had drive,,,what is the best way to do that

I suppose you could just browse the 98SE cab files and find them, then place them into the correct palces usualy System32. But from what I've experienced it's not a problem with the adaptor as per say but with the MS files used in networking. Thats why removing the card from the device manager tab in system and all protocols solves the problem for me. It did it to me the other day when I was installing Win95C as a matter of fact.

Can you actually make it to Windows? If so you don't need to go through cabs looking for those files. You just type sfc in the Run box and hit Return key. You then use the "extract one file" feature to get them off the W98SE CD. This is OK because they are all original files that don't get updated. They all belong in c:\windows\systemIf you can't boot up let me know and I will give you the exact DOS commands to restore them from the CD. Let me know your normal CD drive letter too and whether you ever created a Startup Disk (floppy).
If it comes to it you can re-install over the top without losing your stuff but I always think it's worth a shot at fixing the problem first. [For some unknown reason re-installing Windows or getting a new computer seems to be seen as the way to fix computers by many of those seeking help on this forum these days].

I don't know what you mean, so let's hope the poster does.

I'm now confused. Are you the original poster (phonetech06) or are you someone else posting about a different topic?
DerekW

Strangely enough, 'both' of them seem to have a stuck comma key (what are the odds?)

I suppose it was a wild presumption on my part that phonetech06 had windows98SE And as usual I always forget about the System File Checker :P. I suppose that makes it easier than trolling through the cab files.

Please answer my #7 so that we can understand this post properly.
To use system file checker just type sfc in the Run box.
It would be worth reading my collation and WhitPhil's additions in this post:
SFC CAN GET IT WRONG
DerekW

I see I already gave the method to get to sfc in post #5 (to phonetech06). Did you not understand it? You can only use sfc if you can get Windows to boot up, otherwise you have to use DOS commands - as said before.
