When I bootup my computer (running
Win98SE), I get the following message:
"Configuration Manager cannot be loaded
because one of the following files is
either not present or has an invalid
version number:
VMM.VXD, SHELL.VXD, VTD.VXD,
VXDLDR.VXD, VPICD.VXD or
VWIN32.VXD.
Try running Setup again
Press any key to continue..."

I have tried to do a step by step confirmation startup and saying yes to every line EXCEPT the "override standard VMM".but get the message invalid library.
When I try putting a start up disk disk in before starting up, the same thing happens. The Floppy has no effect

This older post indicates a the problem may be with just one file.

"The Floppy has no effect""

Why do you think that is? Have you configured the BIOS to boot from the floppy first? Are you using a known good bootdisk?

You should be able to boot the hard drive to DOS, seeing as you've been able to invoke the 'step by step' startup

I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

What do you mean by take the saftey labels off everything.

I hope not to suffer the death penalty for my ignorance

As the computer starts, there should be onscreen instructions on how to enter Setup - typically it's the 'del' key, but may be something else. From there you would look for a menu relating to boot options.

While it's a good idea to know how to access setup, that may not be necessary. As the computer starts, try tapping the F8 key to invoke the Windows startup menu - you'll be able to select 'command prompt' which boots to DOS directly from the hard drive.

From there, you could try the solution mentioned in the linked post - deleting the errant file:

del c:\windows\system\vmm32\vmm.vxd

and see if you can restart normally.

Removing the safety labels from household items is basically a concept that would allow the Darwinian process of Natural Selection to reassert itself in modern society by potentially eliminating individuals with profoundly bad judgement, and prevent them from contributing their undesirable characteristics to the human gene pool.

Thanks for your last above suggestion which I have tried.

Unfortunatly I am still unable to get windows to start.

I am now getting a blue screen with the following message:-
Invalid VxD dynamic link call from
hidvkd(03) +0000002C to device"NITKERN ", service 9
Your windows configuration is invalid. Run the Windows setup program again to correct this problem.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Les

That's too bad, I'd hoped that might've done it.

Probably worthwhile running Windows setup, as suggested. Basically, you reinstall Windows into its original folder, which replaces corrupted, missing, or incorrect system files. You will need to boot your machine with 98 startup disk with CD support (unless you can boot directly from the CD itself) - you'll likely also need your product key again.

It's a non-destructive procedure (unlike formatting) so your other files should remain intact. You will probably have to alter your BIOS settings to use the bootdisk, as mentioned in #3
