Hi all, I have just replaced my motherboard, installed all the drivers and everything works fine. EXCEPT it searches for one missing file associated with a program uninstall or reinstall that program that may or may not be used. Thats what its telling me (or something like that). I went to the find files part in windows but it wont find that file etc, I dont want that file coming up at start (the black Screen) and I dont want to press any key to continue. Can someone help me solve this problem. btw its called (dfs.vxd) Thanks

have you searched for it in the registry ? If you find it make sure you know what you are doing before you just delete anything out of the regisrty though.

It sounds like the file is trying to be loaded by a line in config.sys or autoexec.bat. If you copy and paste the contents of those files here, using notepad, someone should be able to help.

From the fragment you have posted about the error message, my BEST GUESS is that you have networking components that are configured incorrectly and you might need Uninstall of Client for Microsoft Networks > Reboot> Reinstall of Client for Microsoft Networks

The RIGHT thing to do:

Shut Down> Reboot> Copy the Startup Error message that describes two or three VXD FILES that might be missing and post the error Message Verbatim so that you get a better answer:-)

Hi Again, ok the message i get is
----------------
Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run a Windows or a Windows application.

The Windows registry or SYSTEN.INI file refers to this device file, but no longer exists.

If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program.

If you still want to use the application associated with this device file try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.

dfs.vxd
Press a key to continue
----------------
So I press a key to continue and all works fine, Ive searched the files nothing there, I looked in SYSTEM.INI, nothing there. So I looked in the regedit and found it under
----------------
mycomputer\hkeycurrentuser\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer
DOC FIND SPEC MRU

also found in

mycomputer\hkeylocalmachine\system\currentcontrolset\services\vxd\dfs

also found in

mycomputer\hkeylocalusers\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer
DOC FIND SPEC MRU

Hope this explains better. What now. Thanks all for help.

I presume that you used the same Hard disk as the Primary HDD in this PC after the Mob change. If that old discarded MOB had an onboard NIC and if you had used the motherboard Software Disc, it would have installed the drivers for that on board NIC in the Windows Registry in the HDD. If you don't use an exactly identical MoB and restore all the previous softweare, the old software could have left 'orphan files' including VXDs that might be looking for the device from the old MOB.

You must consider that possibility.
It will be a difficult issue to troubleshoot.Look in the Control Panel >Add/Remove Programs for any software that you need to uninstall.

I would suggest a trial of uninstall and reinstall Client for MS Network through Control Panel>Network [see my older post]and see if the problem can be solved.
