I was compressing a drive when it went into scan disk and found errors, computer rebooted on its own and then I got errors saying missing file system.ini. I have the cd rom but from the prompt I can't get it to read drive g: which is cd rom. Drive D: is a second hard drive. Bios says it is reading cd rom but it is not drive D: How can I get system.ini off of cd rom in drive g:. Can I copy system.ini from another computer and put it on a floppy and get it in that way? Thank you.

the thing you can do is the next
copy the system.cb to system.ini
then add the following lines in the new system.ini
[boot]
mouse.drv=mouse.drv
drivers=mmsystem.dll

Add the following line in the [386Enh] section of the file:

mouse=*vmouse
The file system.cb is in the windows folder.

Good luck!!!

When you compress a HD you get 2 drives the host and the compressed drive. If you have a startup disk use it.If there is an error in your registry, your computer may become nonfunctional. If this happens, you can restore the registry to its state when you last successfully started your computer
To restore the registry
1. Click Start, and then click Shut Down.
2. Click Restart in MS-DOS mode, and then click Yes.
3. At the MS-DOS prompt, type
scanreg /restore
4. Restart your computer.
Also if you have Windows CD, look at the Other/Misc/Eru folder. Here you'll find the program for Registry backup (and other system files)
And Windows 95 has backed up the registry for you under the names of SYSTEM.DA0 and USER.DA0. You can restart Windows in safe mode and go into DOS where you can then rename these files as the new SYSTEM.DAT and USER.DAT files

In order to stop the registry of system.ini from looking for the symevnt.386 file you need to run REGEDIT to remove it from the windows registry. You need to navigate to the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\Symevnt once the Symevnt key is located hi lite it and delete it make sure you are in the VxD key. This will stop the error message.
