Hi people
i was desperate too and so i became a member of driversguide.com.
it is free and you have easy access to a lot of files.
this is not advertisement for that side.
but there was the only place to find that damn thing.by the way the dfs.vxd file is for a ATI product.
good luck julius

I too had this problem. Although I still am not sure to which program this driver belongs, I OVERCAME the problem!
It all started when I tried setting up file sharing (dfs?). After aborting the process in the middle of the sharing setup, the dfs.vxd was required on boot-up.
So.. I just re-did the file sharing option (in settings\control panel\network) and voila - no more pesky message.
Hope this works for you too!

I am getting that same message, I need that file dfs.vxd, I would appreciate it! thank You
+1 | ![]() |
I too began receiving this error message after fooling around with the network settings (I'm not on a network) Does anybody have a fix besides trying to find the file? Could someone forward it to me at any rate? Much appreciated
+1 | ![]() |
dfs.vxd is one of the files used by win98 for gaining access to network resources shared by Distributed File System (DFS).In Win95 it was a service installed manually but it is now an integrated part of Win98 whether or not your network uses DFS. If you have upgraded from 95 to 98 without first removing the service you might encounter a conflict. So remove the DFS service (if it exists)and de-activate and reactivate client for Microsoft networks. That should do it. As for DFS and what it does, ask your network administrator for more info. Good luck everybody.

The dfs.vxd file can be easily generated from your WIN98 cd-rom. I had the same problem and I found this simple solution after quite some time.
+1 | ![]() |
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ME TOO!!!
I need the dfs.vxd file also. I tried to do
the several advised fixes but still couln't get it. I encountered the problem when trying to install an etherlink card and aborting midway. Thanks.

Found the file! It's in the Net9.cab file on your Windows 98 CD (\Win98 directory). Extract it and put it in your Windows or Windows\System directory.
PS- Missing file seems to be linked with installing AOL. Anyone confirm?

Thank you Mr.Scot Elliott,
I finally found this file and others as the same way you recommended.
It saved my time a lot
Again, thank you .

Had the same problem, and I just solved it according to Scott Elliotts advices. Thanks a lot! (After trying and searching one day I had the idea to look in the Web - I am stupid, sometimes)

This file must have to do with file sharing. I did not have the problem until I tried to enable file sharing for a direct cable connection with my laptop.
Thanks for the location of the file, Scott.

Many thanks, the missing " dfs.vxd " file is found in the Windows 98 CD-ROM. Folder marked "WIN98", under the sub folder of " net9 ", . Then copy the file to your windows directory. Or just double click on the file "dfs.vxd " and it copies itself to the windows directory.

for anyone not knowing what a " vxd " is: it`s a virtual device driver which if you goto your control panel and click on systems and then click on device manager you will find out what your problem is. look at anything shaded yellow ,click on it, you will be able to fix the problem in windows help. if you are going to own a computer and run any operating system you need to learn to fix the miner problems.if you have your master you can fix most all problems

im missing dfs.vxd metsup.vxd and vredir.vxd please i need these files and tell me where to put them. what directory they go in. thanks....
daersoulkeeper@hotmail.com

they are usually in the net7.cab, net8.cab, net9.cab, net10.cab, net11.cab files in the Win98\ directory on the Windows 98 CD. You need to extract them from there after copying them to a directory on your hard drive by using the command extract, e.g.:
extract net7.cab dfs.vxd
and so on for every file that you need.
