I have 2 identical old computers - both witn Intel Pentium S 100 mhz CPU, 64mb ram, EZ-Bios, WD 8 gig hd that I have been trying to install Windows 95 or 98 on. They formally belonged to a school. They have both been fdisked ( 1 8 gig dos partition)and reformated. Windows 95 and 98 install fine. but when they do the 1st setup reboot both give the missing command interpreter error. typing in the command line c:\windows\command.com or c:\command.com repeats the request for the location of the command interpreter. You can type in a:\command.com with Win 98 floppy in place and it will accept that. Dir of C: indicates that all the necessary Windows files are there, including command.com. typing in win gets a missing necessary files area then a blue screen the FAT has failed. computer has to be repowered. Have reinstalled 3 times same all times. Machines previously had Windows 3.11 on them and 2 non dos partitions. One was having trouble finding command interpreter before before fdisking. Memory was upgraded fro 8 to 64. Tried going back to 8 for Win 95 - same errors.

HELP - anything I can do short of putting new MB and CPU in these things??

When the drives were partitioned did you make your primary partition active??? If not use fdisk to do so...............

Have you tried using the bootdisk made during the setup to reboot from , then at the A:\> do a C: sys to transfer the same command.com and other system files as the install is using ?

You may have formatted them with the /s switch using a boot disk made from a different version of windows than the one installed.
