Windows boots up OK but I cannot open word, excel, Windows explorer or any other programs.
The message I see is:
Program not found
This program is needed for opening files of type 'application'
Windows can't find abtbxpn.exe
location of abtbxpn.exe
C:\
I downloaded Spybot to remove what I thought was a virus and deleted all the 'nasties' it identified and I think I must have inadvertently deleted abtbxpn.exe whatever it is.
Help please.
Lizzie

Did a Google search for that exe and didn't find a match. I also did a find search one my machine, which has MS Office 2000 pro installed on it and found no such file. I don't know what it is. I suggest you go to control panel> add/remove software and select MS office. If you then get an option to repair the installation, do so. If not, remove the software and reboot. Then reinstall the software. If you have removed this exe through your previous efforts then running a registry cleaner may rid you of the message, if it still persists after doing the above actions. I suggest Regcleaner 4.3. This utility is simple, free, and safe to use. Find it here: http://www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/archives/reg-cleaner4.3.htm

Lizzie, Go to the link below and download EXEfix08.com and double click it to run it. It should correct your file association problem.

I tried both of your suggestions but when I clicked on >add/remove software and similarly on EXEfix08.com I got the same message:
abtbxpn.exe not found
This program is needed for opening files of type MS-DOS application

No. The link you gave said it was no longer available so I did a search for Regcleaner 4.3 on http://worldstart.com but did not find it.

That address is working. I just tried it and downloaded again. Copy and paste the address I posted to your browser address bar. On the first screen there is a download link for Regcleaner. Try it again.

I ran Regcleaner it downloaded OK then I got this message:
Security warning
Do you want to install and run "regcleaner.exe from www.worldstart.com/"
The publisher cannot be determined due to the problems below:
Authenticode signature not found
When I hit "yes" I got the familiar message
Program not found
windows cannot find abtbxpn.exe
This program is needed for opening files of type applicationI'm going round in circles! Lizzie

Try this:
Copy the EXEfix08.com to a win98 startup floppy. Boot from the startup floppy and type:
exefix08.com
Remove the floppy and retry windows.

Lizzie, Go to the link below and download the EXEfix08.inf file. Repairs altered "exe" open commands in the Windows Registry.
Right click on it and select "Install" from the menu.Hopefully this one may correct the problem.

Does Lizzie really want to repair this exe? This may well be a reference to something linked to the virus she had. As I stated my version of MS office has no such exe so I'm wodering if this is related to MS Office. I think the registry cleaner is the way to go.
Lizzie
The way to use Regcleaner is to go> Tools> Registry Cleanup> Do them all> after the scan is complete> Select> All> Remove Selected> Exit.

OtheHill, It seems to me that whatever that abtbxpn.exe file did or is doing messed up the .exe file association. The EXEFix08 files should correct that. I agree with you on using RegCleaner also and it may possibly correct the problem. This is one odd problem, especially that I can't find anything nowhere referring to the abtbxpn.exe file.

I can't either, that is why I don't think trying to restore it is a good idea. I did a search on my Win98se/MS Office 2000 partition and came up dry for that file. If it is a legitimate file it must be for some other software she has. I think there is an easier way to correct her MS Office issue. A repair. Regcleaner should get rid of the message.

Tufenuf is on the right track.
The program is a virus/trojan that creates a randomly named EXE file.
Since the error occurs everytime an EXE is attempted to run, there is a hook to that app on the file association for EXE's that,in theory, EXEFIX or Fix-Exec should correct.
A registry cleaner will have no affect (especially the MS Regclean that only looks at certain keys to start with), since the EXE reg key is legit.
And I don't think any of the reg cleaners check for tagalongs on the file association keys.

Here's another exefix08 download. It has a .reg file you install with regedit by choosing to 'import a registry file'.
Sometimes the virus will disable regedit. If that's the case, restart in safe mode. It should run then.
Or you can right click on the file and choose the 'merge' option.

There's a slightly different version of an exefix-type reg file here:
