Minature icons in systray

A friend brought me their Pent II computer with 98 on it to clean up. The first thing I noticed when I started it up is that the systray icons are minature. The taskbar icons are normal size but the systray icons are so small that they just look like black dots. The next thing I noticed was that when you open a window the minimize, restore, and close boxes are just like the systray icons - they look just like dots. Does anyone know how to correct this problem? I went ahead and cleaned the system on all spyware and clutter but the problem still exists. I checked the taskbar properties and changed the view setting but I still can't get the systray icons or window boxes to a normal size. Any help would be appreciated.
If it ain't broken take it apart and find out why.

Try booting into safe mode and then rebooting normally.
You could also try a reinstall of win98 'on top'.
By the way, you should state the specs of the problem machine, not the machine that you are posting with.

Tweakui has an option to 'repair icons'. That might be worth a try.

Along those lines, it might also be worth trying TweakUI's "repair system files" feature as well

Control Panel/Display/Appearance tab. Select Item "Caption Buttons" and change the size - you'll see the effect on the sample window above. This setting sets the systray icon size also.
