This isn't exactly a "problem", but it does annoy me. I recently had to wipe out my computer and start all over fresh due to some problems. I used to enjoy listening to piano midis. Now when I go to the same pages I was using before, I can only listen to the music as an electronic piano, rather than an acoustic one. (I want to listen to them as if a real piano were playing them, not an electronic one.) When I used to open the midis before, they just opened in my Internet Explorer page, but now they open in media player. (I had this downloaded before, but the files didn't open in it.. )
I can't remember what program the midis were opening in before having to wipe out the computer.
Any ideas as to why it's doing this?

I have w98se on my P1-Coastline, and I had a little trouble with midi's, too, but I transferred a copy of Micro$oft's mplayer2.exe from the Win_Me cd, and now I not only get better midi playing, it also plays *rol files from many of my old games.
You might want to associate *.mid files with mplayer.exe or mplayer2.exe so that Windows Media Player or programs like RealPlayer or WinAmp don't start up when you select a midi.
As far as playing them in your browser is concerned, that has to be selected from your IE (if you use it) properties menu, under the "advanced" tab. You might want to make sure that you have the following boxes in the "multimedia" section properly selected ..
1. Leave UNCHECKED - "Don't display online media content in the media bar"
2. Check THIS box - "Play sounds in web pages"
Also, not really "plugging" the source, but I find that a "good" (albeit, old and FREE) midi player which returns excellent mix/sound is "Automid II" (by Tim Gerchmez), which you might find somewhere on the net. I tried going to the author's site, but there seems to no longer be an account for him.
Contact me if you can't find it, free distribution is allowed.

Check out Van Basco's Karaoke player.
It is free and also plays karaoke files. You can also have it display the piano keyboard that shows the keys being played. You can also hit the output key and see what instruments are playing and you can disable any of them from playing.
I also found a download site for AutoMid II (the free version).
