I did a clean install of win98se. Win98se did not automatically detect my soundcard and I couldn't choose it from the list, even though it was on the 98se disk. (Creative Ensoniq PCI) It appeared as though the folders from the setup disk were empty. It told me the disk did not contain information about the device. Well, I did go online and download the driver but here is the rub...When the computer is restarted this message appears: The Creative Ensoniq Audio PCI driver cannot load MIDI waveset. MIDI playback has been disabled. So, here is my question; How did the midi playback get disabled? At no time during the install was I asked about that. Can anyone tell me how/where to enable them again? They were there before...Now I have no sound for online card sites. I have an Aopen modem and an ATI all in wonder pro video card. With a clean install of Winme done previously all sound was fine and winme had no problem finding the soundcard with no other drivers...but winme won't run my cd burner without a serious upgrade for it. Can anyone help me with this sound problem or do I have to bite the bullet and buy the new driver for the cd burner? My preference is to not pay any more money right now. I would like to just go back to my old 98se if I can get the soundcard working right again. Please help...me get midi back where it was before! Thank-you, Topaz

I took a look and when I restarted in Ms Dos mode I got this error: C:\windows\system\default.ecw; cannot open file
PCI sudio driver is not loadingIt sounds like the problem, what can I do about it?
Thanks

Hey, I have the same annoying problem! I never used to get this message (just did a fresh Win98 install). Is there a simple solution?

Topaz (et. al.),
I think you answered your own question in your last message. I fixed the problem on my system by copying the MIDI waveset files (eapci2m.ecw & eapci4m.ecw) to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. Don't forget to restart the computer. Looks like the installer forgets to install them in the right place. Works for me (for now) though! Thanks for your suggestion!Juan

Juan, I looked all over and cannot find eapci2m.ecw and if I can find it, please forgive my ignorance but how do I copy it and eapci4m.ecw to system windows system?

This was answered for me in another forum. I thank you all for the help and if you want to see what I had to do it is # 67610. (in case anyone else comes here looking for the answer)...Good Luck
