Please help me if you can...

Compaq Presario
Windows 98
IE 5.5
aol 6.0

I have AOL on the bring your own access plan as I have cable internet connection..

While attempting to sign on to AOL now, the sign on screen would open and I would get connected but as soon as I did I would get the following box..

MICROSOFT VISUAL C++

RUNTIME ERROR

PROGRAM C:\AMERICAONLINE 6.0\WAOL.exe

ABNORMAL PROGRAM TERMINATION

This box would keep repeating over and over and as soon as I ok'd it, AOL would shut down..

I ran scandisk and there are no errors and I also can connect to the internet via IE with my cable connection but I cannot get on AOL..

I have never seen this type of error before and there are no problems on my computer that I am aware of...AOL was fine last night..

Please help if you can...Thank You..

AOL constantly updates itself in the background whenever you log in. It sounds like something has either not updated completely or got corrupted in the process.

You best bet would be to re-install AOL application or contact AOL tech support directly. They are usually very helpful with problems like this and it might be a simple fix.

UPDATE:

You are not going to believe this..

I still cannot stay on aol after it connects due to the problem I described in my above post...

Now, get This...

Using IE (of course outside of aol) I went to Google and did a search for waol errors and came upon a web page and under waol he listed a link to learn more about it and I clicked on it and was taken directly to my aol sign on screen and it went through the sign-on steps (checking password etc..) and I connected to aol and did not get that Abnormal Program Termination..

I was able to navigate all of aol...

I then closed (signed-off) of aol and then tried to access it again from cicking on aol on my desktop which is the way I have always accessed it and the sign-on screen started and after connecting...I got the same damn message that I posted above and had to click ok and then aol shut down again...

Is this weird or what?

Hi Tom
I have had this happen with other programs that I have shortcuts for on my desktop. It only happens after the program has updated. For some reason the program updates but the shortcut doesn't. All I do is delete the existing shortcut and create a new one from the updated program and then all is back to normal.

Thanks MindsEye,

I tried that and still get the error message and aol closes on me but it is so weird that at that waol web help site I found on the internet through a google search I can click on waol help and it will take me right to my aol sign on screen and goes through all the steps using my cable connection (which it should and always does) and I get on aol fine and no error message and can access all of aol with no problem just like I have always..

This is so weird...I'm on aol 6.0 and am thinking maybey I will upgrade to 7.0 since the problem says its in:

C:\AmericaOnline6.0\Waol.exe

I wonder if doing the upgrade to aol 7.0 will work then?

Since I have cable I plan on dumping aol all together in the near future but I can't at the moment as I have auctions running and own alot of domain names and everything is under my aol email address and also due to I haven't notified everyone of my new email address as I have only been on cable for a couple of weeks..

I'm in the process of changing all of my email from aol to my new email address that came with my cable ISP but I still have a ways to go so thats why I would like to keep aol for at least another week or two...Then AOL can take a hike...Thanks for your help

Problem Solved!!!!

Thanks for the replies....What I did is I connected to aol through that link from that web site and I then went to aol Live Tech Support..

This aol tech came on within 1 minute and I told him everything that I posted here and he said "Have you downloaded AOL's COACH program recently"...and I said Yes..

Now, about a week ago I was at aol computer help section and saw a tutorial program that you download and it enables you to read certain help files about computer problems..

I downloaded it and have never used it...we'll, this aol Tech said to un-install it and by doing that that my problem will be solved....So I un-installed it and bingo...Problem Solved...

Never would I have guessed that was causing such a termination message but it did the trick so if any of you also have that aol coach downloaded, maybey you best get rid of it as it has some serious bugs..
