Okay, if you can solve this one, you deserve a medal. (If you have a solution, I'm a neophyte when it comes to messing with system files, so be gentle).
First some background. (I use win 98.) I apparently had two TIFs. I don't know why, but it seemed to start when I signed up with Integrity Online. I think it changed some settings. One of the TIFs was in the usual place, the other was a subfolder in Local Settings. Whenever I'd surf, the cookies and files were stored in the local settings TIF. The other TIF just had a Content.ie5 folder, which contained 8 subfolders with unpronouncable names.
Now the problem. After reading some other discussions on this site, I went through those subfolders in Content.IE5 and deleted all the files except the desktop.ini in each one. Doing so somehow cleared out my History and the functional TIF (in Local Settings), and now when I'm online nothing is stored in either location and browsing is really slow.
I did read another post here from a guy with a similar problem and someone suggested reinstalling IE or deleting TIF from DOS. I have reinstalled IE with no affect. Is it okay to delete TIF? I read that it contains registries that should not be deleted. Does Windows rebuild it if it is deleted?
If I do delete it, which one should I delete? The functional one (in Local Settings), or the one which contained the subfolders from which I deleted the files?
Please help, if you can.

TIFF's= Taged Image File Format for mapped images simular to BMP's.. I don't have any on mime, probably because I don't download images, the only thing that I can think of is that you haven't cleaned out you're temp files so it got full and started another. Do you have you're [empty temp. internet files folder when browser closed] checked in [tools>options>advanced] if not they will just keep on building up..Sounds like yu need to do a good cleaning. Also check out what TIFF files are for..

Jackha,
Thanks, but actually, what I meant by TIF is "Temporary Internet Files." I can see how that would be confusing. Actually, I was trying to clean out my Temporary Interntet Files folder. That is what caused the problem.

You are SUPPOSED to have two "TIFs" ! And that's where your history is stored, so deleting one didn't just "somehow" delete the history! Suggest in the future you not mess around with ANY system or application files you don't understand!

Well, if it makes you feel any better I have no TIF's in Local Settings.
All I can suggest is that you try IE Repair Option (Control Panel/Add-Remove click on MS Internet Explorer and you should see this option).
Failing that you could get the FULL IE download from MS (it takes ages). This is how:
Click on the Download button and run setup.
Accept the agreement and then choose "Minimal or custom install". On the next panel you select the Advanced button and then you can select to download specific components or just download for a later install. Choose the later and select all of the components you want for the back up copy of IE.You then run the ie setup .exe file from the download.
Good luck
Derek

rac and Derek,
First rac, I didn't formerly have two TIFs. I read in another thread on this site that IE6 moves TIF to Local Settings. This seems to be correct because when I tried to delete c:\windows\TIF, I got the usual, "Are you sure?" message. But when I tried to delete c:\windows\local settings\TIF (the new folder, which actually stores my files and cookies), it said, "This is a system file... are you sure...?"
Also, you I didn't delete the TIF folder, or even the subfolders. I just deleted the files in the subfolders. I even left the desktop.inis where they were. If what you say is true, I can see why it would clear the History folder, but not why it would prevent any other History to accumulate as I continue to browse.
Besides, I was under the impression that TIF and History are entirely two different things.
Derek, I tried that already, exactly what you said. That didn't work. It didn't have ANY affect on my TIF or History.
Two more problems I noticed. The smallest problem is that IE6 will not download now!!
The more serious problem is two-fold. First, when I go to TIF setting on Internet options, there place where the current location of TIF should be is blank. When I try to assign a place, it resists with a window saying: "There won't be enough space in the new location for the currently downloaded content. Please either delete these files first and try again, reduce the size of the folder, or pick another location." What's up with that!? I figured this was talking about my Downloaded Program Files, so I deleted the two I had in there. But that hasn't changed anything.
The second "fold" of my two-fold problem is that on the same TIF setting screen, the space set for TIF is 0 megs. It used to be 1. Something changed it. When I try to change it, it says, "Please select a value between 1 and 0." But the arrow will not allow you to go back to 0, and I get the same message when I input "1", so I just have to cancel out of it.
What the heck is going on with my files? I was reading some other threads and they said that TIFs and History can be deleted because at boot up Windows will just recreate new ones. I don't get why mine won't.

Hi Dave,
You can delete all the temporary internet files and the folder itself safely. But I suggest you to build a new folder for IE.
In IE, click TOOLS, Internet Options, Setup, Move Folder......, you can direct your IE to save the TIFs in a new directory.

Thanks Leonard.
I was posting while you posted your reply. Please read Response Number 5. I tried to change the TIF location but no dice. Any ideas?

Oh, I forgot. One more thing that is perplexing me. I'm not a complete idiot, so before I deleted anything from the subfolders at c:\windows\temporary internet files\content.ie5\, I made a copy of content.ie5 and all its subfolders and files. After these problems cropped up, I restored the backup copy, but these same problems continued. I am baffled about what changed when I deleted the files, and why putting them back didn't fix the problem.

You got me!
Why did you say IE6 can't be downloaded? In http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/, it can just now. maybe you have another meaning?
And on my TIF setting screen, the space set for TIF is 80 megs, why did you say "Please select a value between 1 and 0."

open "tools" "internet options" then delete all offline content , delete cookies , delete
history , click on settings and on the next page try setting the amount of disk space to use to no more than 80mb then close out and reboot the computer and see if the problem is solved.

For your interest, the most relevant looking registry entries on my machine are as follows:-
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
"Cache" entry is C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files
"LocalAppData" entry is C:\WINDOWS\Local Settings\Application DataHKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
"Cache" entry is C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet FilesHKU\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
"Cache" entry is C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet FilesHKU\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
"Cache" entry is C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet FilesMake sure you backup your registry first if you should decide to go poking about in there.

I just spoke to a friend who solved my problem. It seemed so simple, but I would have never gotten it.
Since the TIF settings showed no current TIF location, and wouldn't let me move it, we went to c:\windows\temp\TIF and renamed it. For whatever reason, when I went back to TIF settings, there now was a location listed and the setting was at 1 meg rather than 0. I moved it to my desired location and I am up and running, and my history and cache are working again. I don't know why it worked, or why it freaked out in the first place. If anyone knows, maybe you could explain it. Now, should I delete the renamed folder since i've bypassed it altogether, or leave well enough alone?
