I am looking for a program that will tell me what Windows programs are using what percentage of RAM. Is there anything like that out there? Thanks for any info.

Why are you concerned about what uses how much memory. Memory allocation is dynamic and changes from second to second. If you have an app running and you do not use it for a while, windows will swap it out to disk, if there are other programs that need ram. If you are getting Out of Memory errors, that is related to either System Resouces or a Swapfile that has a low MAX set on it. If you are, create a new post for recommendations. Or, do a search for System Resources. BTW Running Memory freeing programs is a waste of time. Windows does not need free ram in order to function. And free ram is wasted ram. Besides,all these "memory managers" do nothing on their own. What they are doing, is forcing WINDOWS to create the free memory (which it would if it was REALLY necessary), and in the process,it moves inuse memory out to the swapfile.

I have a user who says their computer is "slow", and wants to know why. I know that he has about 50 programs running at once. We have WipeOut running on it, and we are able to free up about 60MB RAM. We just added another 128, and it still says 60MB when we run WipeOut. He's very concerned about where all his memory is going, and he's the type of user that NOTHING you can say is right (and endlessly asks why we're not on UNIX) and I'd like him to see where it is being used up, and by what programs. It's just him - no one else has these issues, but he's the loudest one...

If he has 50 programs running AND they aren't along the lines of Word/Excel etc. then a TON of them can go. Use the following site to determine which can be UNselected in Msconfig. http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm On Windows 98, Windows uses as much ram as it can, and assigns any "spare" to the file cache. As I indicated above, running ANY program that attempts to free/clean/defrag/manage memory is a complete waste of time and is counter productive in the long run.

You might try using Taskinfo. It gives you details as to memory usage and CPU utliization.

Wintop will tell you what is using memory and the percentage in real time (or close to it) If you just added another 128 but memory usage is the same with 60MB Freed up, then it could be wrong memory type (especially with Compaq's) or something else.
