Anyone know of a free media player that uses minimal resources while playing CD's while I'm surfing the net? WMP9 seems to use up alot.
Thanks

The big thing with MP3s is the CPU usage. Decoding MP3s is a very CPU intensive job. Other resources are pretty much inconsequential. Any MP3 player will be about the same in CPU usage.

Yeah, you certainly don't need any resource hog with 166 mhz. Just use the cdplayer.exe that comes standard with Windows. Pretty basic prog that uses little resources.

G'day.

"CD Player" is only part of it because you don't normally use that for playing downloads. I accept the general point of Windows original built in facilities though (such as WMP6) but sadly the files have changed so much they are unsuitable for many new ones.

I'm sure there are freebies around that do everything that WMP7 onwards can do without being so bloated. I don't happen to mind waiting for the thing to open though and I'm happy with the facilities.

I just thought he was playin' his own CD's while browsin'. I didn't know he was playin' MP3's.

While primarily an image viewer, Irfanview is quite capable of playing MP3s. You will need the IV_PLAYER.exe plugin to handle most audio files including MP3.

Good point Rimfire, I'm sometimes guilty of forgetting all the features Irfan incorporate - great program.

Well, for all I know you could be right Janet. It was just an assumption on my part because most folk do more than CD playing.

Guess I can be pretty basic sometimes...I play CD's all the time while I'm on the net. Well...MP3's too

For playing just CDs, the standard CD player (C:\Windows\CDPLAYER.EXE) should suffice. Alternatively, you may still have the old Media Player (C:\Windows\MPLAYER.EXE), which is still far less of a resource hog than the newer versions of Windows Media Player.

For playing MP3s, the old versions of Winamp will do nicely. I used version 2.10 on a Pentium Pro back in the day without any problems, so I suspect it will run well on your 166. Heck, I still run that same version of Winamp on my P3.

Thanks for all the replies,

Janet, yes, I play cd's while surfing, not MP3's as indicated...I will try the origional windpws player for that.

Derek, no, I didn't fix the WMP9 problem, that's why I'm asking about a player that uses little resouces.

Thanks for all the replies and I will also try an old version of winamp.
