One interesting thing...the media player WORKS in the safe
mode...just poor quality picture..

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

The cause...

Tried to download a demo game from Internet (Rainbow Six demo
site)....

It said I did not have a current enough DirectX version...

Downloaded and installed latest/greatest DirectX 9.0b.

Rainbow Six now says my video driver not supported.(NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64). SOOOO...I went to their sight( NVIDIA) and downloaded greatest latest with DireceX 9.0 compatiable

Sooooo...Uninstalled first, then deleted the demo game from computer
(it took up 213 meg of memory)

Oh yea. you cannot uninstall DirectX 9.0 once it is
installed...great!!!

Now the problem begins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now I can not play any .mpeg files, .wav files or any associated
Media player files on the Media player.

Media player console just sits there and says "connecting" at bottom but does
nothing else. Hour glass is "working".

If I do a Ctrl,Alt,Dlt, it says Media player (not responding) if I do
an "end task" here then the Media player goes away, but I can never
get it to Open/start again.I have to do a re-start the computer
before it will even come up again.

Went to Microsoft site and downloaded latest/greatest Media Player
9.0 (thought maybe the latest/greatest DirectX needed the
latest/greatest Media Player). No help at all.

Tried uninstall/reinstalling Media player 9.0, also IE6, also DirectX
9.0

Ran DXDiag...it said..
Display Tab 1: The file nvdisp.drv is not digitally signed, which means that it has not been tested by Microsoft's Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL). Current drivers tested for a WHQL logo are only available on Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. New Windows 98 drivers are no longer tested for WHQL logos.

Thanks a bunch in advance..
Scott

Hi Scott

Have you tried SCANREG /RESTORE from MSDOS mode ?
Choose a date from before the doomed install of DirectX 9

Your video card may be outdated for certain graphics intense programs. At the very minimum a GEforce64 may be what is needed to run such programs. TNT2 is a good video card but it will not work with programs such as Unreal II or other high graphics programs.

Actually read the previous post from
Subject: DirectX PLEASE HELP!

Sounded kind of like what I had..

He mentioned the DirectX Buster program..
I got a free copy of it and it did revert my DirectX back one version (7.?), but did not help the problem,,

Should I reinstall DirectX 9 and then do the "SCANREG /RESTORE from MSDOS mode "
or does the Buster do the same????

When using scanreg /restore it is best to put your machine back to as near as possible the same state of install as the date of the registry you wish to restore.

This will reduce the likelyhood of any mismatch problem between the files/programs and the restored registry.

If I've read this right it means uninstalling DX9.

Tried the scanreg/restore...it only let me go back a few days...and still did not solve the problem....I'd have to go back a few weeks really...

I did an "Regedit" on 10/17/2003 and did an "Export" for what I'm guessing as a registery backup???? Can I do an "Import" now while in Regedit, and get back to the KNOWN good registry settings???

Hi Scott

Certainly worth a try to Import the Reg from that day...provided you exported the whole registry and not just an isolated key.

Good luck

Think back and try to remember if Export was done right from the top in regedit (My Computer). That way it Imports the lot.

Whatever, it will only "merge back" what you've exported. So if you've added any keys since they could still remain. Mostly it works tho. I use batch files (only saving good registries).
