media player 9 wont play video

I wonder if anyone can help me out with this one as im pulling my hair out trying to sort it out.Recently windows media player 9 will not play any video files at all,it will play mp3's but no video,when i try to play a video file with media player 9 all i get is a message on the player itself saying (Connecting) and then it freezes and i have to ctrl-alt-del and i get a "this program is not responding" message,i have tried uninstalling it and installing media player 7.1 but the same thing happens,strange thing is i can play video with the original wmplayer2 that comes bundeld with 98se,other video players i have play video files perfectly but media player 9 wont,are there any other good media players out there that i can get if i cant sort out media player 9,i do like media player but this is annoying the crap out of me,any response would be much appreciated...Thanks.
