Media Files/Out of memory

I'm trying to run media files using Windows Media Player 9. I receive an error message stating: "Your computer is running low on memory. Quit other programs, and then try again" (Error# C00D11C6) WinMP 9 has worked on this CPU in the past and I've never had an issue. I've made no major changes to the system over the past while. I've tried the classic "uninstall/reinstall" steps along with clearing out my systray, but to no avail. I've also tried other media players and I've had the same sort of results. Any ideas?

open msconfig.... see what is starting in your Startup files. you only need systray scanreg explorer (sometimes will not show)
also, go into the autoexec.bat and config.sys tabs and uncheck everything. Windows 98 does not need anything in these two files to run and usually has paramaters set that eat memory.
also, be aware that Media player, all versions, are a HUGE memory hog. If you are just playing music, try a different program, like WinAMP.
