My system responds slower than it should with McAfee 5.0 active. It is much better when the antivirus is disabled (system scan). Help!

my advice is to trash MacAfee. i have seen nothing but trouble from their products, whether its the AV or the firewall. but good luck trying to uninstall it though. that product embeds itself everywhere in the HD (hidden files, registry) after you uninstall it do a search of the HD and delete all entries on MacAfee. i would search the registry also. good luck.....

Sounds typical for an active virus scanner. You have to remember it's scanning all the activity you have on the machine. You could disable it while surfing the web, most viruses are transmitted through e-mail or mp3's etc. downloaded from the net i.e. Kazaa / Winmx etc. Beware of any .exe files. Run a scan when you're done surfing. Foolish maybe, but I have no other answers. I use AVG virus scanner. It's free and doesn't seem to slow the surfing down much. Good Luck.

You could also cut down on what and when it scans. I feel that scanning every file that you open is not really necessary. As long as you scan everything coming in from the Net you should be pretty safe.

My Pentium 4 system (my other one running WinME) runs very smooth, but it has Norton AV 2002 installed. Using the same amount of ram the PIII system has (256 MB), no problems with web surfing. Maybe I'll use Norton on my PIII system too.

I have version 5 also and I don't run it unless I scan email as it slows down the computer too much. I have installed Norton on other computers and feel it does not slow the system down as much. But, I have taken McAfee out of other's computers and done it via the registry above and beyond the normal add/remove and it has really messed up the computer. If you decide to take it out, just do the add/remove and let the other items stay that may be left over (naturally take out left over shortcuts, etc). They will do you no harm as they are not being used and take no space at all. Version 7 is out and you can upgrade for pretty cheap now with the rebate they are offering online. But, I haven't heard how good it is, etc. so I can give no advise to that.

I use "McAfee Uninstaller" I purchased for $20.00. It will uninstall most any thing on your computer. It's done ok for me so far. It will even remove McAfee Virus Program with no problem. Cleans up any left over tidbits.
