I have recently run across a machine that is running ok but starting to become more unstable. It is running WIN95 and Norton Utilities 3.0.9 is now saying that "The Boot Record could not be repaired. Unable to continue testing the rest. Scan disk finds no problem and NDD.exe comes up with nothing also. I noticed a post earlier about running to reinstall a master boot record. Will that leave Windows intact???

Hey, its easier than you though to replace your master boot record, and YES it will leave windows intact. Just type fdisk /mbr at the command prompt, this will replace it with a new one, that is DOS oriented, but it won't mess up windows.

Hope this helps.

I have two harddrives. One (4Gig) has Win98SE and I tried to install TurboLinux on the other one (1Gig). It installed LiLo on the MBr and now when I boot up off C, I get "1010" all over the screen and that is all I get. I can boot with a floppy or a cd, but not the HD. Will Fdisk /mbr fix this as well?

First Make a system boot disk by typing format /s a: at the root prompt i.e.
"c:\> format /s a:" copy fdisk.exe from \windows\command directory to your new systems disk.

Hard boot to floppy type fdisk /mbr at the a: prompt. This should help..

My problem relates to a Compaq that I want
to install win98 on. Presently its got win95.
When I put a dos boot disk in C: isn't available
to format. When ths sys is booting from the HD
a compaq splash screen shows when the ram is
being checked.
I suspect that compaq has some spl MBR that the
dos boot disk can't see C: from.

If I put the MBR from another
machine that is running win98 (not a compaq)
should I then be able to format C: and install
win98 ?

This is a good board, learned a lot in a
few minutes. (When you don't know much, learning
a lot is nice.) :-)

I've got all my plugins in Photoshop 4 so i've been reluctant to upgrade, however I loaded photoshop 5.5 (solved the icc problem caused by a bad file) and have begun to load in plugins. I added some demos from Computer Arts magazine, scanned with AV and Anti-Trojan software, and was suspicious when i found my winini (thanks to Check it)had been altered with a link to an uninstaller. I right-clicked and chose Inoculate IT which found 3 virri in memory, 'Cascade' at 0005B948h- 'Micro Cops' at 0007437Ch-and 'Ignorant' at 0009B548h. Micro Cops is the one that attacks MBR, is it possible to use the information about recovering MBR here, in case Micro Cops, or similar attacks it?

I did a ghost on my hard drive to put on my new bigger hd. 1 week later, I got message" System Integrity Master boot record has chaged since inoculation. Choose inocluate if you've just updated your OS. If the change was not expected, choose repair. Well, I must enter continue and powered machine and BOOM...I got message - Invalid Disk System. Replace the disk and then press any key. Is there a way to recover this and not have to reformat the hard drive. I like to back all my data 1st and then go from there. Please let me know what I need to do. I'm desperate !
