Comment:

Hi,I installed a maxtor Ultra ATA/100 PCI Adaper Card.
I can get the HD to bootup w/os on it after I fdisk /mbr.
But, my system will not recognize the CD-ROM
even with it "attach to mobo or attach to Adaper Card".
Now,if I boot to windows and install the Driver's then the CD-ROM
will works.

Now, here is my problem HOW DO I INSTALL A OS SYSTEM ON A NEW HARD DRIVE IF I CANT USE THE CD-ROM UNLESS I AM IN WINDOWS AND INTALL THE
DRIVERS IT CAME WITH.

IT DOES NOT MAKE SENCE TO HAVE THIS ADAPTER IF I CANT USE THE CD-ROM.

THE ADAPTER RECOGNIZE THE CD-ROM ON FIRST BOOT SO IT KNOWS IT'S THERE.
I NEED TO BE ABLE TO LOAD CD-ROM DRIVER'S WHEN I BOOT FROM FLOPPY BOOT DISK LIKE A WIN98 DISK,SO I CAN INSTALL WINDOWS.

When I put the cables back on mobo Hard Drive on IDE 1 and CD-Rom on IDE 2 then the CD-ROM works out side of windows just like it did before.

So what gives? I have done everything that I can think of.
what do I do? I hope you can help me because if you say you cant then
I have spent a ½ day for nothing.

Sorry if you can sence anger in this letter it is because I am.

I'm not sure I understand the problem. Is there some reason that you can't leave the cdrom connected to the motherboard IDE port?

Shouldn't the boot disk (which would have come with the CD) load the drivers for your CDROM?

Otherwise, and I might be wrong, so maybe get this validated before hand :) Haha, when I had a problem trying to get my NIC recognised in dos, went in to BIOS and disabled detect plug and play. Maybe this will work?

Sorry I'm not much help!

Its not a plug and play bios its a old PC.

It does not matter if cd-rom is connected to
mobo or adapter card cd-rom will not work.
When I boot with win98 boot disk and load
with cd-rom support it cant fin cd-rom
now, I know the cd-rom works please read
1st post carefully.The cd-rom will not work
while I am using the adapter card for HD.
IT does not matter if I plug cd-rom to mobo or adapter card the cd-rom will not work "while HD is connected to the adapter card".

I have that same card and don’t recall having your problem. I know that my CDROM is recognized in the boot sequence right away, long before the OS loads. If it is attached to the MOBO IDE, I see it right away. If it is attached to the card, it shows up when the card BIOS loads. Correct jumpering of the CDROM is crucial though!

I wonder if your problem could have something to do with how your CDROM is jumpered or what type of IDE cable you are using for it and your other HDD.

I’d suggest you try to put them both on the same cable (80-wire/40-pin) with the HDD as MASTER and the CDROM as SLAVE and connect this to the Primary IDE of your new card.

Using a WIN98 with CDROM support, try to see if both eh HDD and CDROM aren’t recognized when you boot into DOS. Once your OS is loaded on your new HDD, you can then cable the CROM and HDD separately.

another question for you,
are you using the ata/100 80 wire ribbon cable for the hard drive, that came with the maxtor ata/100 pci controller,
a 40 wire ribbon cable won't work right, with that card.

you might try calling maxtor for free support,
they know their stuff.

David, check your plugging very thoroughly! It might differ depending on if devices are alone on a channel or not. Check the plugging doumentation on the drives!

Why do I get the feeling there's some bios settings not right here? The Triton 430FX chipset should be capable of handling the CDrom Drive on an IDE channel.
Try resetting bios to defaults, and give it another go.

Well I emailed the maxtor tech.
Here is what he said AND what I said.

Dear Maxtor Customer:

To solve your problem you will need to boot up to a diskette that has your CDrom drivers built into it. A Win98 startup diskette works best for this as it has universal CDrom drivers built in. When booting up to a Win98 startup diskette you will be given the option to start with CDrom support. Saying yes to that should load what you need.

What I said.
Thanks for gettng back with me I have been building computers on my own for a long time I am not a dummy
at this I am using win98 BOOT WITH CD-ROM SUPPORT (IT SAYS THAT CANT FIND CD-ROM)
PLEASE DO NOT WAST YOUR AND MY TIME WITH THAT ANSWER AND MAYBE CHECK YOUR CABLES STUFF.
I KNOW WHAT I AM DOING.
I HAVE INSTALLED DIFF..........OS A HUNDRED TIMES.
NOW BACK TO THE PROBLEM PLEASE READ MY LETTER CAREFULLY.
THE CD-ROM CAN NOT BE FOUND IN WINDOWS OR WITH LOADING THEM WITH FLOPPY DISK WIN98 DRIVERS,OK.
NOW,AS LONG AS MY HD IS CONNECTED TO THE MOBO AND NOT THE ADAPTER CARD """
>""""THEN MY CD-ROM WORKS''''''''''''I HOPE YOU CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT I AM SAYING BECAUSE IF YOU DO NOT THEN I AM WASTING MY TIME TALKING TO A WANT-A-BE TECH.
I MAY SEEM ANGRY THATS BECAUSE OF YOUR STUPID ANSWER YOU GAVE ON YOUR RETURN
REPLY
THANK'S
DAVID
P.S. I HOPE I DID NOT MAKE YOU ANGRY I AM THE ONE THAT HAS SPENT A DAY ½ TRYING TO MAKE THIS WORK IT HAS COST ME TIME AND MONEY.
WELL WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME,YOU ARE THE TECH'S?

Well so I have had it with products and tech that cant do what thay say thay can.

Hey David:

Your frustration is appreciated. I’ve felt that way many times.

I know that when I installed mine, I had to be very careful about how the CDROM was jumpered and cabled. I’ve got the CDROM on the primary IDE of the MOBO and I have a 40GB HDD on the primary IDE of the card and the secondary IDE of card is connected to a 10GB HDD as master and a CDRW as slave.

I think that there may be a problem with your MOBO. Perhaps it is not compatible with this card. I’ve only used it on two Tyan S1590s and my friends Compaq (don’t know the model number). Perhaps it just won’t work with yours.
