I noticed that in Windows 95, it doesn't seem possible to maximize/minimize windows by clicking on them in the taskbar. It is possible in later versions but not in '95. Is this a known limitation to live with, turned off by default, or downloadable (like font smoothing for '95)? Thanks!

Now, I wonder if I'm reading you correctly.
I've just powered up my old 486 with W95 first edition on it (nice to give that 270M HD some excercise LOL).
I then double clicked a .txt file and minimised it to the taskbar. Leaving that running I did the same with another .txt file.
Both appeared as blocks in the taskbar and I could bring them up again or switch between them without difficulty.

Do you have another mouse you can try? This seems odd!!
Maybe you could uninstall your mouse in the control panel and reboot.

Thank you for the responses.
The problem I am addressing is not computer specific. It has happened on any computer that I've used '95 on:
In Windows 98 and later, if you click a closed window on the taskbar, it will maximize that window. If you click it again, it will minimize.
In Windows 95, clicking a window on the taskbar only maximizes it. Clicking on it again it will not minimize it; you need to go to the top of the window and click the minimize (-) button. I am not sure why it doesn't minimize like the later versions of Windows.

OK, I'm with you now. My W95FE doesn't toggle from the taskbar either. I've never run into a fix/option for this, maybe someone else has.

Mine behaves 'normally' (Win95A)
It might depend on whether or not you've upgraded - I've installed the quicklaunch toolbar on my Win95 systems (IE4), and then IE5.5
We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true

My W95a normal also, with WDU (Windows desktop Update) from IE4 installed. Wasn't WDU was required to get single click?
Best
