Max RAM I can install

My computer came with 64MB ram I added another 64MB and now have 128MB. How much RAM can I install in my computer. Is there a formuler for maximum ram for a computer. I have a HP Pavilion 466MHz. I would like 256MB of ram. At some point does the RAM become unaffective, like my computer would not use 512MB of RAM even if I did install that much, it would use 256 of the 512MB of ram?

Performance for your machine levels out at about 128. Except for things along the line of CAD programs, you really won't notice a significant change in performance.

You can install as many modules as you wish.It will certainly boost the performance of your system.No such limitations for Ram upgradation.

Because of the way that Win98SE and Win95 cache memory, 512MB of ram is the maximum that can be used before Vcache starts to run out of addresses. This can be dealt with by changing “MaxFileCache” under [Vcache] in the System.ini file. If you let MaxFileCache=512000 (512MB) (email me), you can use more than 512MB RAM with these operating systems.

The maximum amount of memory that you can install is dependent upon the motherboard. Adding more memory will not necessarily make your system faster. If you only run one program at a time it will probably not make any significant difference. More memory will help in running several programs simultaneously.

Check your motherboard manual. It will tell you how much RAM the board can 'Cache'.
Adding ram above this amount will actually slow down your system. HTH
