Have you tried replacing the MBR from a Win 98 boot floppy disk ?
Boot up with the floppy, and at A:\ prompt, type FDISK /MBR ( and press Enter )

Go into the BIOS setup as your computer is booting up, and check that Boot Virus Protection is disabled...if it is enabled you will not be able to overwrite the boot sector.
Then try FDISK /MBR again.

Hi mihai, Krystyna, Jason_123, hi everyone,

Hi Krystyna! ;-) very good posts! nice to meet you on Computing.Net!

Some explanations for those who like to understand:
The system has 2 issues of the MBR, the one in use and a backup one.
- FDISK/MBR just copies the backup onto the main one
- sometimes your antivirus says your MBR has been altered (it just compares both MBRs) and asks what to do with them: keep the main one, keep the backup, etc.
- the Bios protection against viruses simply prevent main MBR from being changed.

HTH

Have a good day,
Gérard from Paris, France
