Comment: When my mouse went crazy this morning, acting in a manner suspicious of virus activity, I wondered if my impenetrable fortress had finally been breached. I tried to start a virus scan, but alas the mouse had a mind of its own. OK, to the keyboard, suddenly it became non responsive, probably due to the steroid enhanced mouse activity. The menus were going off like fireworks. I calmly took a deep breath, twisted off the cap and removed the ball from the mouse. Close inspection of the roller revealed chunks of sticky ridges, badly needing a cleaning. So, I cleaned it and tried it again. Nope, something's wrong. So I shutdown hard and pull the mouse. Restart, keyboard ok, restart still no PS2 mouse and Windows offers serial mouse opportunity. Go with that and running virus scan now. Serial mouse working ok, so far. For what it's worth, I suspect the PS2 is ok now as well. I have gone on service calls for wild behaviour and found a dirty mouse to be a major cause of the problem many times. Now I just get the customer to check the mouse first. Keep it clean to avoid these issues.
