I would like to make Winamp the default player for .asx and .wma files. How can I do this? Can it be done? I got some very complicated answers at the Winamp web site regarding the Playlist Loader.

In recent version of winamp, 5.08e it contains in the options, preferences, file types the .wma files . So go there and check them

As about the .asx ones which I cant see them inside there, START, SETTINGS, FOLDER OPTIONS, FILE TYPES.... usualy .ASX is connected to Windows media player Icon
1) Either you remove this and after when you click the .asx file it asks you to open it WITH... and you choose (checked) Winamp program..
or
2) you edit this value and you put Winamp inside the play or open key values in the place it has the Windows media player, ok and set Default.

I hope I helped you

If all else fails, highlight any .ask file (if you have one present). Hold down shift key, right Click and choose Open With. You can make this permanent by ticking the box.

You will only need to do this with one .ask file (it associates all of them). Do the same for a .wma file.

If there is an option to set file associations in Winamp itself that is a better way to go.

If those files types are the only ones you allow Winamp to install then those are the only ones it can play.

i know this may sound stupid but you could always uninstall media player, i see you are using win 98se which the highest player for that was MP7 which is a very unstable program

Everbody has different views I suppose. I've had WMP7.1 with W98SE and never run into instability problems.

I do think it is a bit bloated though (takes too long to open). Earlier MS players were much faster but don't always play newer files - even with same extension.

Winamp 5.08e seems to be pretty good. I have WMP 7.1 running because occasionally you run into a situation where the file wants WMP. My default player is Winamp. I listen to music alot and I like the way I have playlists base on genre. I make sure that I have the MP3 files on the same partition on all machines in my network and Winamp will play the playlists accross the network. Spent many hours editing those tags but I even have custom genre. I have one called DooWop.
