Right, here goes! I downloaded the latest drivers for my TNT2 graphics card earlier and installed them. After rebooting I got:
While Initializing device CONFIGMG: Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your computer.
In a panic in safe mode, I tried removing the graphics card from the Device Manager to see if I could re-install the original drivers again after rebooting. This didn't work and was perhaps stupid!
Luckily I was able to boot to my other drive which also contains windows 98 to allow me to get on the net.
I've read the relevant microsoft support page, but it doesn't seem applicable to my situation - having installed new graphics drivers.
All I really want is to get back to how things were. I didn't really need the new drivers to be honest, although I thought they could improve a game I'm playing (baldur's gate) at the moment. I just want to get the original drivers back so I can carry on as it was.
If anyone can suggest how I can do this, bearing in mind I can only access safe mode on the other drive, then I'd be super-grateful!

Well, I just rebooted back to the other drive and it booted OK and asked for the display drivers. Loaded the original ones back in and everything seems OK again. Very strange. I'm happy that it's alright again (hopefully) but I also like to know why things have gone wrong.

Man.. you'r asking too many questions!
Things go wrong because its WINDOWSE! :)
Next time try MAC OS or Linux [GNOME] ... then i am sure that thing will work very well! :)Elad

Well, it's happened yet again, but this time without any warning whatsoever. Windows just crashed and wouldn't boot up again. Seems the prob is related to msmouse.vxd. I'm going to search but if anyone knows what this might be about, please do reply.

This is a long convoluted address so just copy and paste it into your browser. This might help. You can also do a search on google and you'd be surprised at the number of related problems and solutions available. Good Luck
