I have a Win98SE plugged into a Router on a small lan.
It conflicted with another box with the same IP, so I made This one's ip Static. Now, it connects great to the LAN...I can see all the other computers, map the server drive, etc.
HOWEVER, now I cannot access the Internet.
I did go back into the tcp/ip config and add a Gateway IP, but still, I cannot access the Internet.
I set the IP, SubNet, and Gateway (which is the IP of the router).
Am I missing a setting?
THANKS

Check with your internet service provider.
Most of them charge extra for a static ip.
Windows: Just another pane in the glass

It plugs into a router.
The router is getting the IP from the ISP.
This is just the ip for the LAN which is being preset (not being assigned by the router, but within it's range). All the ws on the network have different IPs.
Have I missed anything in the static IP setup for the above pc on a lan?
THANKS

Kev100,
You need to set up both your router and PC correctly to make things work. On the router you need to access it (vie Browser using the default IP specified in the instructions). There will be 3 areas of concern when you edit or change things.
--o General setup for the router is done by a browser, and entering an IP address (usually this is 192.168.0.0). This is the IP of the router, it is suggested that it be changed to 192.168.10.0. Change the password from the default, and if you can change the name of the router from its default.
--o On the Router WAN side (internet) you need to enter all the configuration information that was supplied to you via your ISP (IP's, Gateways, DNS's).
--o On the router LAN side (local network), you will need to designate that the router will be a DHCP server. This will specify an IP in the range of 192.168.10.??? for each computer that attaches to it.
--o Make sure you save your settings upon exiting.
Heading over to the PC side: Control Panel > Network > TCP/IP [your network card] > Properties. Change the following settings.
--o TAB IP Address - check the Obtain IP automatically.
--o TAB WINS Configuration - Disable
--o TAB Gateway - Enter in the IP you assigned to your ROUTER in the Add box.
--o TAB DNS Configuration - Some ISP's require this information some do not. Try it blank first. See if your ISP supplied you information on this area, like Domain Name or Host information. If that is required than you need to also add the DNS information that the IP supplied also.
--o Reboot computer - have your Win98 install disk handy it will ask for it.
--o Rebooting your Modem first, then your router after it and then the PC.
In your Browser you will need to go to settings, and make sure your set to access the internet by a LAN.
Good luck, post back how it all worked out.
Cheers

Schooler,
Thanks VERY much for that description. I'm not at that system presently, but will have this printed out and at hand next week.
Hopefully, this is being included in the speical How-To section for others.
Thanks
