Hi,

I realized that my system resources are running at 66%. And I have never seen it over 78%. I run ad-aware pretty regularly. I also have thoroughly checked to make sure are no known viruses. If I restart my computer it will generally go back up to at least 78% but never any higher. Is there anything I can check or do to increase this. Here is some detailed information about this system which may or may not help you with the diagnosis. Thanks in advance.

Win 95 B
200 megahertz Intel Pentium w/MMX
16 kilobyte secondary memory cache
2.56 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity
1.71 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space
128 Megabytes Installed Memory

Thanks,

Kyro

Hi Kyro, hello everyone

Actually what we would need to see is a list of the items that load at StartUp.

66% shouldn't have any ill effects.

I do like to see it much higher than 78% after a fresh restart, might just be me. :-)

Go to Start and Run.

Type msconfig and click OK.

Select the StartUp tab at the top.

What is listed in there?

Best Regards,
Mesich

SYSTEM RESOURCES EXPLAINED

The term 'System Resources' can be misleading. Normally you would think that 'System Resources' would mean RAM, Hard Drive space, etc. However when used in relation to the Win9x 'Resource Meter' it refers to the 'User' and 'GDI' segments of a fixed 64KB of RAM set aside for them. Each running application uses up a portion of this area. If you have too many applications running, or a faulty application that is using too much or not releasing correctly, then you can run out. This can cause the system to become unstable. An important thing to remember is that falling 'System Resources' does not affect the performance of the system until you run out. Do not worry about the amount of free System Resources until they get down to the 10-20% level. There is no way to increase the RAM set aside for this use. Adding more RAM to your system does not help.

As Mesich has indicated, there is nothing wrong with 66. Increasing the percentage does not translate to improved performance. If you are not getting Low on System Resources or Out of Memory errors, don't worry about them.

But, you should check your startups and get rid of the unnecessary ones.

You can download a Win95 version of MSCONFIG from here.
