Could some one tell me why my free memory would be so low when I bootup? I run memory defrag and it brings it above target. Only have the problem a startup. Thx mark

I do that all the time. I defragged and got a message saying 386 swp file couldn't be defragged because it was in use. Any ideas on this or is it normal. mark

That's correct, you cannot defrag the swap file when it's in use. You can temporarily disable virtual memory, run defrag, and then re-enable virtual memory.

Are you running XP or Win98? You listed 2 sets of specs.

It's a windows 98 system. I have 3 systems. Not talking about the one in my profile. If I check my free memory periodically using system mechanic I am sometimes only 5 mb free memory. I defrag and it goes back up to about target level. But why is it going so low and staying there. My other systems don't do this. I have everything not needed at startup shut off. So I have no programs running in the back ground. The system has a total of 312mb ram. Mark

You're not confusing memory with system resources, are you?

No. it's free memory that goes low. Even when system resources are at 88% it will still go very low with the free ram. Mark

There is obviously something running, somewhere. You need to run a diagnostics program to see exactly what is actually loading. Try msconfig from the Start, Run? How about Ad-Aware and Spybot? And, maybe, Regcleaner? I think you will find it with one of those.

Good luck! :)

Could it be system mechanic using it up?

When you say "target"; of your 312Mb RAM what is your target number?

Try looking at it from another perspective.
Go to Start, Run, sysmon, Hit the Ok button.

If "Other memory" is not already displayed then go to Edit, Add Item, Memory Manager, Other Memory. Also go to View and make sure there is a check next to "Status bar".

If you click on the panel that shows the 'Other memory' then in the Status bar at the bottom it will show how much is presently being used and also show the largest amount that was used.

Is it 5Mb less than your total of 312Mb RAM?

Use PRCView to see what processes are running.
If you click on an item in it's list then it will show you more info about that item. If you click on the Startup button it will show where that item is running from.

In System Monitor (sysmon) you can display "Unused Physical memory" if you prefer or in addition to other items.

I may have found it. I ran No-Adware 2.0. It came up with about 7 items not being found by ad-aware and spybot. All but one were classified as dangerous. One of them had the word memory in it. I checked free memory after startup and was at 190+ free. Hopefully I got it. Thx Mark

That's excellent.

Now, if you really want to get rid of another piece of "junk", stop running whatever it is that you "think" is defragging your memory.

Defragging ram is architecturally impossible, regardless of what the piece of software states.

As well, if it is creating free memory, this too is a fool's game.

Me too.

NoAdware

"aggressive, deceptive advertising (1, 2, 3, 4, 5); false positives work as goad to purchase; flagged by Ad-aware as "scam" (1); has exploited names of "spybot" and "ad-aware""

While I by no means believe Ad-aware or Spybot are perfect, I am always intrigued when claims are made that they've missed a major pest on someone's system.

Do you regularly update the detection files for both?

Confusion reigns
