Would really appreciate help on this folks.

Sounds maybe like I lost my windows installer
program (e.g. instmsi.exe) or my listed (in add/remove list) Microesoft Office 2000 Premium file is lost.

Sorry for the long below explanation, but it looks like its necessary.

To clear temp files I opened start, then find, with "look in" drive C set. Opened edit, clicked "select all", then deleted some entries and emptied recycle bin. Think I forgot to enter *.tmp (was trying to delete extra temp files). Now I cannot open my individual saved documents from my C:\ MY Documents main file page. When I Click the file button and "quick view" I can see the individual document, so I know the document is still saved. The system tries to operate Microsoft Office 2000 Premium. It says "the feature you are trying to use is on a CD Rom or other removable disk that is not available" and to "insert the 'Microsoft Office 2000 Premium' and click OK".

More specifically what happens is that when I open any specific word document, the windows installer comes on stating it is "preparing to install", then the Microsoft office premium window appears stating "please wait while windows configures Microsoft 200 premium" and soon then says "gathering required information". Then it stops and says "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disc that is not available. Insert the 'Microsfoft Office 2000 Premium' disc and click OK." In the "use feature from" box is just says " Microsoft Office Premium." When I click on "OK", this comes up: "The file 'Microsoft Office 2000 Premium' is not a valid installation package for the product Microsoft Office Premium. Try to find the installation package 'data1.msi' in a folder from which you can install Microsoft Office 2000 Premium." Then there is an "OK" button. When I click the Cancel button, the "Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product Microsoft Office 2000 Premium. The Windows installer could not continue."

If anyone has an idea on this I'd sure appreciate input! Thanks much, DI (JIM)

Jim, the file data1.msi is on your Office 2000 CD. If the installer doesn't accept the version on your CD, it may be due to the fact that you upgraded your original installation with a Service Release (SR1a or SR3). I slipstreamed the service releases with my original Office 2K into a new CD, and this resulted (I believe) in an altered data1.msi file. If you have done something similar, you may need to hunt around for the correct version.

I have been facing exactly the same problem with Office 2000 pro. The original installation was done several years ago, and I had this problem when trying to install SR3. Although I have the Office pro discs, I don't have the Office Premium discs, and nobody can find the damn things! So, as a last resort, I decided to try to uninstall premium, and re-install pro, as I didn't need the additional programmes. Guess what? It wouldn't even let me uninstall without the original premium disc, in particular, the right version of data1.msi. Eventually, I had no choice but to try to remove all traces of office and start from scratch. After several attempts, and using jv16 powertools to remove hundreds of registry entries, i thought I had removed all traces of office. I then re-installed Office Pro. Initial installation OK, as was SR1. BUT, when I got to SR3, it demanded a version of data1.msi from a disc it couldn't actually identify (presumably as I had deleted the keys from the registry), but which is preseumably office premium. I have wasted about 10 hours so far getting nowhere!!! Can anybody point me to the right version of data1.msi? The only other solution will be a complete reformat, and you know how much fun that is!!!!!
