Help! I accidentally FDISKed my hard drive in my Packard Bell Platinum 2240. It was running windows 98 before I FDISKed the hard drive.
My serial number is "Y130480598"
My Model number is "A950-TWR"
My FCC ID is "FOD685PT"
My P/N number is "890498"
If you guys could give me more information on the Packard Bell Recovery disk(s)(that I don't have), that would be great. Also I would like an owners manual and any other documentation.
Thank you. Dodger

OMG - "accidents" happen (to some folks fairly often)

I don't think that information is going to help you much in this situation if you don't have recovery or OS disks.

Unformat? Recovery can be problematic - if data is overwritten, it may not be recoverable.

If you do in fact have recovery files on a hidden partition, it may be showing now that you removed windows. Go back into Fdisk and see if you have and option 5, change drive number. If so, do that and see how that drive is labeled. It may even show up right when you enter fdisk. Post back.

sorry, that bootdisk did not work, othehill.
and there was no hidden partition. I entered the serial number in the program, but that didn't work and it found nothing.

Well how do you know that recovery disk file is NG? When you fdisked you c: drive, did you repartition it? A recovery disk, if so configured, is nothing more than a program to reinstall the cab. files and hardware settings and drivers, from a hidden partition. You may not have ever had that setup. One way to find out is this: return to fdisk and write down the total drive size as shown there. Next read the label on the harddrive. Keep in mind that drive manufacturers fudge on the capacity of drives. Just post the two numbers here and I, or someone else can tell you if there is a hidden partition. If there is no hidden partition then there can be no recovery. Even if there is a hidden partition, all you will get back is the drive with the files on it like it came new. All your stuff is gone.

HI all
if all you have done was fdisk and have not formated, then there are programs that will repartition the drive as it was before. Will reboot to different disk and try to find the name of one I have.

It said 8033MB in FDISK. It didn't say on the label the hard drive capacity. It did say other info. here it is:
cylinders:16383
Heads:16
sectors:63
The bios said 8033MB. But the no. of cylinders is diffrent. it says 16320 cylinders.

If the label on the harddrive doesn't give the drive capacity then the other info of not help. Topfarmer has the only possible solution. According to windows knowledge base the use of the unformat command under windows will not work. So you have to decide how important the info on the drive is. I don't think there are any guarantees. IF you decide that you are going to give up on recovery I would suggest that you try the unformat command from a dos prompt anyway. I don't see how it could do any harm. Make sure that the unformat file is on the floppy you boot with. If you try that and it doesn't help you simply fdisk again and create a new partition and mark it as active. Then you can install an OS.

there is a problem when the bios setup sees the drive differently as stamped on the hdd.

the data from your hdd will tell you the size.
[(Sec x heads x cyl) / 1,000,000] x 512 = size in mbs. --8455.2mb

DO AT RISK OF LOSS OF ALL DATA!!!
as a last resort (have never read or tryed this) run fdisk and set partition at 100% and set it active, do not format and see if it will boot ???? fdisk I think only will write to the partition table located in track 0, if only 1 partition.
If you try the above would diffenently like to know if it worked!!

the unformat command can not work till the drive is partitioned.

Hey Dodger,
You do realize if you did have the recovery disk that it would only return your computer to the way it was when shipped new!
All of your installed programs since then would be gone, So if you are satisfied with that then you should just get another copy of win 98 and start over again. You could even use someone elses copy and install in on your machine(illegal, but you can still go to windows update site and they dont track you or anything!)(better yet do the same with win 2K as win 98 will be gone soon).
Otherwize(back to subject) you only hope if you need old programs is some undelete utility as disscused above.
Good luck,
Glenn
