Lost volume control icon-task bar

Lost task bar icon for sound, also on pullint it up under startup/entertainment /volume control, nothing happens.
Reinstalled Win98SE over itself to no avail.
Had this before on my WinME needed to reformat anyway and this took care of the problem.

erm, not sure i have you right here but is this the very same problem whereby you can open the control panel, enter sounds and mulitmedia and then simply tick the box at the bottom enabling taskbar sound icon?

If it's Windows 98 we are talking about, then the icon you must have in Control Panel is MultiMedia.
