Successfully formatted HD and reinstalled Win98 Se. Now I can no longer go above 16 colors/640x480 pixels!
I have been searching for a solution for the last 7 days!! I've searched numerous driver websites, online forums and microsoft's knowledge base. I thought I found the driver (sis5597-98) but it did not work.
I have read about this exact problem throughout so many forums and online tech support sites, but I cannot find a solution!!!I cannot afford a new moniotor at this time...is there a solution?!?
Here are my specs:
CPU: Sis5597 (But when I looked at the chip
itself it read Sis5598)
Processor: Cyrix MII-300
Memory: 6GB
Monitor: Royal Information Electronics
DL-1455/Model-450Mobo: I have found two different manufacturers.
1. Based on the serial number on the actual
Mobo: PacBell #182453
2. Based on the Bios String: GVC-IN5598
Does anybody have any suggestions??Successfully formatted HD and reinstalled Win98 Se. Now I cannot find my video adpater/driver! I have been searching for a solution for the last 7 days!! I've searched numerous driver websites, online

Download Everest home edition. This should help identify the hardware in your machine so you can locate the correct driver. If everest doesn't yield the info you need, post back for additional similar programs. Find Everest home edition here: www.lavalys.com

Try the SiS website:
http://download.sis.com/
Asus A7N8X-X
1800+ @8x210mhz
512mb PC3200
Ti4200/8X 128mb
WDC 60GB

Thank you all for the help, I have gone to the Sis website, even ran their "online chipset identification system," but found nothing useful. The scan found that I had incompatible/unsupported sis adapters. And I can only seem to find the SiS6326 driver, but I don't know if this will even help. I know next to nothing about flashing, jumping, or otherwise upgrading my bios.
I downloaded and ran the Everest Home Edition, which is very thorough but I don't know if I am looking for the correct info.
Here's a list of some of things I think may help me at this point:Motherboard
CPU Type:
Cyrix 6x86MX/MII, 225 MHz PR300
Motherboard Name:
BCM RX133PM (2 PCI, 1 AGP,1AMR,3DIMM, Audio)
Motherboard Chipset:
SiS 5597
System Memory: 61 MB (EDO)
BIOS Type:
Award Modular (06/25/98)
Display:
Video Adapter Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)
Monitor TRL/RIC DL-1455M (81330383)Motherboard Properties
Product: SiS-5598-W877F
Version v1.03
Serial Number: 06/25/98I thought I found my answer two days ago when I found these three drivers 597113-6/7/8.exe, but to no avail, I think its because these drivers (if that's what they are) are specfically for Windows 95! B/c I am not able to load/extract all files and there are plenty of files with Win95 in their name and I cannot open them. I also found driver info at the SiS website, but it was for Win95 and NT!!
The drivers above now give me the blue screen with the Fatal Exception 0D error, so I have to reinstall video adapter to the default every time I try to up the resolution.
I've also downloaded a wizard to detect my chipset and mobo but now I have three different manufacturer id's. One from Everest, one from the serial number on the board itself, and one from the bios string.
1. Everest: Phoenix
2. String: GVC
3. Serial #: Packard-BellThe only way I could identify my monitor was to search it's FCC #, and then I used a Pixie.exe file to install my monitor type, but I don't even think that is correct anymore!
This is getting way too complicated for my novice skills. Is there a video driver/adapter for a:
GPU: Sis5597/5598
Processor: Cyrix MII-300 225 MHz
Memory: 62mb
OS: Windows 98SE
System: NEC Ready 9851
Monitor: Royal Information Electronics DL-1455...after the original adapters/drivers were lost after a win98Se reinstall?!?!?

To be more specific....
Looking back at my notes over the last week, I think I see now that GVC and Pac-Bell are basically the same as far as manufactures go.
1. I do have an IN5598 (which is my part #)
I previously found that same info through
the Mobo ID search @ Motherboards.org
2. Using the "BIOS Agent" I see that my
chipset is: SiS5597 rev16
3. Using the online systems scan at the SiS
website I recieved this summary:
Graphics: N/A
AGP: Not SiS AGP Device (Provided by
board maker)
IDE: Not SiS IDE Device ""
4. When I ran a debug looking for my
adapter I found this:
"SIS PC I TRUE COLOR GRAPHICS AND VIDEO
ACCELERATOR 1.M BYTE VIDEO
MEMORY,SHARED MEMORY BIOS Ver 1.07a
01-12-98; SUPPORT VESA BIOS
EXTENSION VERSION 2.0"
5. Also tried a ID video .bat file provided
by www.computerhope.com to ID my video
adapter but to no avail (perhaps it was
only looking for a video card)So the more I look at it the more I wonder:
a. was the pixie file incorrect? Allowing
me to load an incorrect monitor?
b. Are my drivers only for Win95?
c. If the drivers are correct do I need to
update my BIOS to allow them to respond
properly?
d. Until I loaded the drivers (597113-6/7/8)
none of the aforementioned could detect
anything other than the default adapter. In addition, I now have systems info from Everest Home edition. Hope this helps.

Here are two additional utilities that may help ID the video chip.
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
http://www.octools.com/index.cgi?caller=sandra.html
(download the standard edition)

Everest's identifying your video as:
Video Adapter Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)
means it's not able to see the correct adapter. It also means the correct drivers aren't installed. Windows installs the above adapter when it doesn't know what your adapter actually is.
Your debug results in #5 above indicate your video uses shared memory. You may want to go into cmos/bios setup and increase the amount allocated to video. This however shouldn't affect your ability to install the correct drivers.
When installing video drivers you often need to set the video adapter to the Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA) before installing new drivers. I think it would also be a good idea to go to add/remove programs in control panel and remove any previous attempted video installations that may show up there.
Assuming your info about your board is correct, the page I linked to above should have the correct drivers. I'm downloading the drivers now and will see if I can figure out if there's a particular way you need to install them.

Excellent advice by DAVEINCAPS. Additionally, I suggest booting into safe mode to check the installed video devices. If multiple entries exist, remove all.

Thanks OtheHill.
I downloaded and extracted the file (SiS 5598 Win95 Video Driver Version 1.07c). It extracts to four folders named disk1 through disk4. Apparently this setup is to install it from floppy disk. You could copy the contents of each folder to a floppy disk and install that way. Or you could try browsing to the disk1 folder and running setup from there. It may also work to copy the contents of all the folders to a single folder and run setup from there.
Since I don't have that video adaptor I stopped at that point and didn't run the installation.

Thanks again, I will try the suggestions.
Just to add...
I am aware that Win98Se setup only provides defaults.
I have tried the safe mode uninstall, reinstall of the drivers I presently have and the drivers I want but I am only rewarded with error messages, specifically, "the adapter does not match the hardware, etc.....will restart with default settings....do you want to restart now??"
And....the "SiS 5598 Win95 Video Driver Version 1.07c" looks very familiar to the drivers I have been trying to install. I have something very similar in four parts as well, but I can only extract parts of the files as I am missing some ".dll" files. My attempts to run the extracted setup files error with the message that I do "not have the correct operating system."But one thing I have yet to try is a suggestion by DAVEINCAPS:
"You may want to go into cmos/bios setup and increase the amount allocated to video."
How is this done and can I do it without causing more complications?
Thanks again...I will try that website offered by OTHEHILL....and post my results...

Hmmm...I've been trying to install:
-SiS 5598 Win95 Video Driver Version 1.07c-
as suggested but I keep getting this same warning message after the initial setup gets to 99% complete:
"REGISTRY ERROR! PLEASE REBOOT COMPUTER"
I reboot, 3x's already and I even restored an older registry just in case.
Ofcoarse I uninstalled all drivers in safe mode even the monitor.
I keep getting the warning message after which nothing happens, the setup ends.??????????
I also tried the BELARC application and though it is good, it only shows what I have thus found, my driver is the generic driver and my monitor is the monitor I installed with the Pixie.exe file.
STILL TRYING.......

Changing Video Display
Right click a blank part of your screen>
Properties> Settings> Advanced> Adapter>
Change> Next> Search> Check specify location> click browse> Find the path to the file for your card and operating system> Enter

Sounds like there may be some other problems besides just the drivers. Before another attempt to install the drivers do a CTRL-ALT-DEL and shut down everything except explorer.
I hadn't noticed previously, but there is an .inf file in the disk1 folder. That should suffice to install the drivers using OtheHill's method above.
I had assumed the 95 drivers on GVC's site would work OK for 98 also. Normally you'd expect that if they didn't work there would be drivers specifically for 98 available for download. Here's some other drivers that say they're for 98:
http://www.video-drivers.com/drivers/61/61206.htm
I don't know if you've tried them already. You can use drivers and all as user and password when it links to driverguide.

As mentioned above, you often need to make sure the graphics adapter is identified as one of the generic ones before you do the update. If you're unsure how to do that, it's explained in #3 in this previous thread:
http://computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/156610.html

Thanks for all the help, well I have some more research to do, system stats, how-to's, etc, so I will try all of the above and post back as soon as I am able.
Still, my graphics were ok before the format and reinstall, so I am hoping I can get it back, I guess that's why I think there may be some hope....Thanks again, be back soon.

What is happening is this. You are trying to install a new driver like you would a software program. That is not the way. You have a driver in place for Std. VGA. You need to direct windows to change that display to whatever it actually is. That is where to driver files come into play. Try following my instructions in Response #13. If the instructions are not clear to you then say so and we will attempt to clarify.

Ok,
OtheHill
I think that I understand the process for properly changing the adapter (Response #13). In safe mode, I set the adapter to the generic settings. I restart, and "Browse" for the new drivers I have unzipped into a single folder on my desktop, and I have also tried from the c:\\win\temp\files where I also extracted them into. And....when prompted to restart I do so and like before I get this display message as windows finishes loading:"There is a problem with your display settings. The adapter type is incorrect or the current settings do not work with your hardware."
So I reboot with the 640x480x16 settings,(b/c another message also alerts me that I can change my settings after the basic setting restart).
Still, the new adpater I chose is being detected. So I try to change the settings
to anything higher than the default and I get the blue screen error message:"A fatal exception 0D has occured at 034F:00005603. The current application will be terminated"
So I usually have to reboot into safe mode, restart, the first error message usaully comes back, and I am back to where I started from. The drivers I have been trying to get my system to detect are:
Sis597
Sis5597-98
Sis5598
VIA_4in1_443vI've tried one at a time, I've tried combinations. I have unzipped the files, deleted the files, re-extracted onto the desktop as individual files, combined into one folder on desktop, re-extracted into the root drive...I have tried the specific setup files that have come with the some of the drivers and the following have been my results:
1. SiS597.cab file: "Setup is unable to
find _SETUP.DLL, which is needed to
compete the installation"
Error 103"2. SiS5597-98: "Setup requires a different
setup of windows. Check to make sure that
you are running setup on the Windows
platform for which it is intended"
Error:1023. SiS5598: "There is a problem with your
display settings. The adapter type is
incorrect, or the current settings do not
work."4. VIA_4in1_443v/SiS Multimedia v1.13.53
When I run the setup file that is
included with this driver the install
process seems to run ok, right after the
setup/wizard/install reaches 100%, the
setup ends and I get this message:""REGISTRY ERROR! PLEASE REBOOT COMPUTER"
DAVEINCAPS:
I just downloaded another driver from DriverGuide.com - Video.exe - So I'm going to give that a try now.
In the meantime...under My Computer>properties>system properties>performance I am getting the following message in the text box:"Compatibility-mode paging reduces overall system performance."
"Drive C is using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system."Clicking on details I read that this due to Windows being unable to indentify a real-mode driver or memory-resident program loaded on your Config.sys or Autoexec.bat file????
Connections?????
STill going..........
(thank you for all the input)

If you're getting the msdos compatibility mode message in safe mode, that's normal. If not, run msconfig and click 'advanced'. Make sure 'force compatibility mode disk access' is not checked.
The VIA 4in1 is a chipset update. You have a Sis chipset and not a VIA so you shouldn't even be using it. I wonder if your attempts to install that have messed things up, possibly causing the msdos compatibility mode. You may want to go to the site recommended by jam in #2 above and download and install the IDE driver
Then try reinstalling the drivers from GVC. If that doesn't work you may want to try the generic video drivers from the Sis site.

Check device manager in safe mode and see if multiple entries for video are present. If so, remove all. It sounds like the card is being misidentified by the utilities. Did you try the others I mentioned?

hey hows it going!
I have the drivers you need on my old restore disk. Email me and I will send them to you and how to install them. They are archived right now in a cab file. it has an installer and everything you need.

Thanks for all the info, I've been busy at work and I haven't been able to tweak w/ my system all week. But I will get back to it this weekend. I still haven't found the correct drivers, settings, etc, and I'm still no closer now than I was two weeks ago.....
Bob, yes that would be awesome if you could send those drivers:

I had the exact same problem after reinstalling W98 with a Cyrix MII 300.
The correct video adapter driver for my system and the original video adapter was the Chips and Tech Accelerator. That is a default W98 driver and should be on your system.
However, if you have ever replaced your video card, you will need the appropriate driver for the existing card.

I had the same problem you are speaking of. I installed windows 98se on a Packard bell 850 with a new hard drive and had video problem. The solution is to place this:
597v113.exe in the autobat. I have the 597v113.exe program too. Let me know if you still need help. Just e-mail me if you need help @ sawallace@bellsouth.net

I have found a driver that will work with sis pci true color graphics and video accelrator. I had the same problem you have. The required driver is found at driverguide.com and it is txproII.zip
I would suggest reformatting again and reinstalling win98se then download this file. This is how I fixed my exact same problem.

Thanks for the input, I broke down, paid a tech friend of our business to look at it, he reformatted the HD and reinstalled windows, opened it up and checked to see if all the cables, etc were connected...works fine now....only...my burner is now having difficulties, it will only burn at 1x....before it used to burn up to 8x's!!! (HP Cd-writer plus 9300 series) Oh well, at least the system was saved.
Does anyone know of a good burning software that will not suck all of system resources......???
Thanks again.....
Maz
