Melissa, try going to Multimedia Properties & untick the box>Apply. After a shutdown & restart, go back & tick the box again>Apply.

Have you ever noticed that if you rearranged the letters in "mother in law", they come out to "Woman Hitler?"

The only time iv'e ever seen the multimedia properties all greyed out is when the drivers have'nt been loaded for the sound card, or if there's a conflict in resources between the soundcard & another device.
make it idiot proof & somebody will make a better idiot.!

You say you went into windows setup and removed the volume control--did you then reinstall it?

In 'multimedia' what is the playback preferred device?
Some sound card software will install their own volume icon. Have you checked all the listed icons there?
Check in msconfig--startup also.

I didn't read your #6. Go ahead and try it. The line will be:
drivers=mmsystem.dll
If there are other drivers listed in that line, keep then there also.
