I have Win98, and the windows explorer is suposed to give you a preview of the image files when you select them, well not anymore.
What do I have to do to get it back?

While initializing device IOS:
Windows Protection Error.
You need to "retard"
your computer. Yeah well.. doesn't work, because it has a set speed for windows own device drivers. but yer smart though.

I have the same problem, I lost my preview in explorer after paint shop pro changed all pic associations, I changed them back and did everything that I could think of, but still no preview. must be a windows 98 defect.

It's easy to fix:
Click Start, click Run, type the following command in the Open box, and then press ENTER:
regsvr32.exe /i shdocvw.dll

I have read this suggestion also elsewhere...
As I have the same problem, I tried DB suggestion.
But, .... nothing happened, even when I rebooted the system.
So, what did I wrong ????
Does anybody have a alternative suggestion ??

Thank gosh! at least I'm not the only one with this problem........I have spent hours trying to figure it out......to no avail!
(it will preview an html doc. though.just great :( if anyone figures it out PLEASE TELL ME-----thankyouverymuch! -S

I found the following in another newgroup question, then searched it out in the Microsoft Knowledge base... They state the following:

Here is a fix...
This involves editing the registry so be careful and back it up first!1) Start>Run; type in REGEDIT; hit Return
2) Expand H_KEY_CLASSES_ROOT and scroll down to the .GIF or .JPG entry or whichever extension is not working
3) There should be another key called ShellEx within the .GIF folder; if it's not there, create it by selecting .GIF, right clicking and selecting New>Key. Type in ShellEx and hit enter
4) Right click the ShellEx folder you just made and choose New>Key. Enter the following name for the key:
{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}
5) In the right hand pane, right click the (Default) value and select Modify
6) Enter the following in the Value Data box:
{7376D660-C583-11d0-A3A5-00C04FD706EC}
7) Close Regedit. You might need to Restart to see the effects.Note: This procedure can be used with other image formats (.jpg, .bmp, etc.) as well to show the preview in Explorer.

I did the above and Viola, the preview is back, and I didn't have to reboot.

I think this default value is entered by an application program when it registers itself with Windows. I have two computers with the same software installed on both (don't tell anybody). The stated default value works on both machines for jpg images but I had to use a different one for tif images. I copied from my old computer. Make sure you get the right extension (jpeg<>jpg, tiff<>tif, etc.).

Mickey is right! I came across this problem before and never did fix it. I just came across it again, and like he said, I didn't even have to restart.
Thanks Mickey..........

I tried DB's solution, but it didn't work. I gave Mickey's a try and it worked without even rebooting. Thanks Mickey.

You are the man Mickey! Thanks a bunch. I have been comtemplating reinstalling Windows because of this small anoyance. Also did not have to reboot!

i tried Mickeys suggestion and it did not work. are there any other things to try??
if you respond could you also cc my email.

There is a fix file that will do the Registry repair for you available from Nathan's Help Page http://members.xoom.com/rlk253/ftp/prvwfix.zip The file name is prvwfix.zip. Download, unzip and double click the .Reg file. Your problem should be solved. This is easier and safer than trying to mess with the registry on your own (which didn't work for me anyway) Thanks again for this fix Lee!

Thank you all guys. You save my day!
After uninstallation of a shareware(an image viewer), preview within my 98 windows explorer was lost. During the past six months, I was frustrated with this unconvenience and tried many ways in vain to find a cure. Thanks to the "prvwfix.reg" file, I finally got it back!!!!
Again, thank you guys for posting the question, discussion and its solutions.
