Comment:
Hello,
Today I was @ a friends house working on their old dell that has Windows 98 installed. She had outlook express setup with POP3 to download her emails from her email account she has with RR. To make a long story short, outlook express had some errors in it because it was an older version, so I updated it using windows update to the latest version of outlook express. All the mail accout settings were still setup in the new version, but the saved emails she had before are all gone. Now I need to get them back some how. They may still be on her computer somewhere, or I may have to restore the computer if this is possible? I think it is possible in Windows XP, but she has Windows 98. What sould I do? How can I find here emails and get them back? They are no longer on the email server. Is there some program I can use? Thanks in Advance, Kyle

I don't hold much hope but you could try this
Win98 keeps a backup of registry for the past 5 days(or more with ini file editing).
Try hitting F8 on startup, choose command prompt only.
At the c: prompt, type: cd\windows\command
then type: scanreg /restore and choose a date prior to the problem.

One alternative you can consider is restoring the previous version of IE. Go to the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Programs. Then select M$ Internet Explorer and Internet Tools and click the "Add/Remove" button. A new window will open when you can select the option to restore the previous Windows configuration. This will take you back to where you were before you updated it. I suggest, however, you wait a while and see if anyone else has another alternative. there are some pretty sharp guys on here.

Check and see if there are two idenities in Outlook Express since you did the update.
The default location for the stored files is here:
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities\{XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
The X's above represent different letters and numbers for different identities.
Is there two different folders, with the numbers/letters, in the Identities folder?

Another way .
Hi mesich
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx
OE5 has a proprietary binary format that makes archiving individual messages difficult. In addition, a number of
people have indicated that their message folders have become corrupted and OE can not read them. Consequently, they have lost all the messages in that folder.DBXtract.exe extracts all mail and news messages from individual dbx files. After extracting the messages one can drag them from a Windows Explorer folder into an Outlook Express mail folder.
PS. if you have a lot , make sure you nominate/create a folder , or you will have them all over & off your desktop .

Hi Johnw,
Very nice, I was not aware of a program that would extract the individual messages within the .dbx file.
I can think of many times that such a program would have came in very handy, not only here on Computing.net but out in the field.
Thanks for the link and sharing that. It is very much appreciated as is all the knowledge you share here.
Best Regards,
Mesich

There was a major change in OE a while back. I 'think' it was from version 4 to version 5. The email folder location was changed and the files were changed from a MBX extension to a DBX extension. You could do a search for 'MBX' files. Not sure what to do. if and when you find them, to recover the emails.
