I have a user using Outlook 98 with Windows 98 as the OS. She deleted an attachment from an e-mail message and wants is back. It is not in the mailbox or on the machine. Othe than recovering a copy of the message from a recent backup is there any way to get it back.
Thanks in Advance,
[:-)»

Try file-recovery software, if it's that important. That may not work, paticularly if that section of the hard drive has been written over with something else. The best idea is to have the sender re-send to attachment.

Thanks Bob,
I tried recovery software already with no luck. When you delete a message, even from Deleted Items, it is fairly easy to recover soon afterwards. I just don't know where deleted attachments go??

I don't think deleted attachments, or even deleted mail messages, are cached anywhere once the "deleted items" folder is emptied. If someone else knows different...

do a full search of "c" drive for the attachment. start---find--files/folders--type in name of attachment. i still have lots of pictures, movies and various other attachments i have deleted from my mail, still on the hard drive---especially pictures. post back please with results.

Something wrong here! I don't believe it's even possible to delete/remove an attachment from an email message in Outlook Express.

rhonda, email attatchments aren't stored on the drive unless you save them before deleting those emails. If you don't save them as files they're history.

Who told you that Jose???

In Outlook 98 when you delete a message from the Deleted Items you can recover it by opening your deleted items and going to Tools/Recover Deleted Items, if you are receiving your mail via an Exchange server. The attachment was never saved to the hard drive so there is no copy of it on the hard drive. She opened the message, highlighted the attachment, and accidentally clicked delete. When she closed the message she was asked if she wanted to save the changes. She clicked yes when she should have clicked no. It is quite possible the attachment is not recoverable, but I thought I would test the minds of the computing.net community.
Again,
Thanks for the help [:-)»
