Over the last two weeks I started getting errors hanging up my computer. This came to a head last Saturday when during windows loading I got an error saying "Powrprof.dll cannot start", "Error loading powrprof.dll". My system seemed ok but once I shutdown and
rebooted, my system profile was trashed. My background was gone, color scheme changed,
desktop icons mostly gone, and start menu programs mostly gone. I checked and found
the desktop icons were still listed in C:\Windows\Profiles as well the start menu
programs, but they weren't loading.

I've noticed most of my programs seem to think I'm running them for the first time,
like all history was lost.

I'm running McAfee and had it starting on boot. I've changed that so it doesn't,
and since, I haven't had a crash.

I have run a full scandisk, no problems. Also ran sfc and no system file errors were found. Also full virus scan was clean.

I tried to make a new profile and copy the desktop icons list and the start menu
list over. This got my background back, start menu program list back (different
order but all there). However the desktop color scheme is still gone and the desktop
icons are still gone.

I found an entry on this forum talking about reloading a backup copy of the registry
>on bootup. I tried this using one from last Thursday, but it wouldn't load.

I have two other desktop profiles which seem to be ok but they were not in use when
the system crashed.

Any suggestions on how to get my desktop back would be appreciated

When this first occured, were you downloading anything at the time? I know you said you scanned your computer using McAfee but sometimes Anti-Virus programs aren't able to detect some of the newer types of viruses out there. But this depends on whether you regularly update McAfee or not. Did you regularly update McAfee?

Vi.

Actually there had been an update installed the day the problem happened. From reading I've done, McAfee and W98 are a problem with the latest engine.

My problem now is to get my desktop back. Still researching.
