My problem is this- for some reason i've lost both my cd (cd-r/cd-rw)drive letters. When i look in my computer/explorer the drive letters E/F are not there. Looking into device manager shows no drives. Putting in a cd in shows no activity. I've trisd looking in the knowledge base but nothing lined up with my problem. I haven't installed any new hardware/software or played inside the PC. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Look in BIOS and see if they are listed there. If they are not, try and detect or install them in BIOS.

Does the performance tab in Device Manager say you are running in "MSDOS compatibility mode"?
Go to device manager
Click first entry for IDE controllers - Master Controller
Right click, and choose "properties"
In Dual IDE channel settings, choose "BOTH IDE channels enabled".
If no luck, try this -
Run Regedit
HKEY Local Machine\system\currrentcontrolset\
services\vxd\ios
DELETE NOIDE from right screen.
If still no luck -
It could also be a boot sector virus...Boot up on a 98 boot floppy, and at the A:\ prompt, type: FDISK /mbr
Post back with results please..

One bad drive on a channel can cause a problem with the other drive. Try connecting one drive at a time. If they both work alone on the channel, try splitting them up, one on each channel.

If the cdroms show up on the posting screen you may want to restore a previous registry. Exit to dos and at the prompt type:

scanreg/restore

and enter. Choose a registry to restore with a date that precedes the problem.

This often works if they disappear from 'my computer' for no reason. It won't work if there is an actual hardware problem.

The problem has been resolved. One of the CD drives was the issue.

Thanks for all the help.
