After doing a fresh install of Windows98 SE I tried windows update and it gave me an error, I tried it with my old drive and it gives me the same thing, I thought I had until July 11th to get 98SE updates? I can't copy this windows installation to the other drive because it has too many errors. Does anyone know where I get all the updates for 98 SE including Internet Explorer6.0 & Outlook Express6.0? I found some here but it doesn't look like they have all the updates

Windows Update is still working for me. They upgraded it to V4 some time after the W98SE CD so maybe that has something to do with your issue.

I can't vouch for it but there's always this:
UNOFFICIAL
(someone posted it recently).

For IE6 there is this:
IE6 SP1 FULL
It will run in on top of IE5 once you've downloaded it all.

I don't know the answer but there are a lot of hits to wade through about this error if you use "Windows update error 0x80072F89" as the search string in Google.

One of them said it worked after IE6 was installed, so you could use my 2nd link in #1 if you can stand the large download.

If you do the Internet Explorer SP1 update, you can still get the updates from the site as always. You just have to have that one ingredient first. (It's not the end of the world!!!)

"After doing a fresh install of Windows98 SE I tried windows update and it gave me an error,"

When referencing errors in computing, it's best to quote the error message verbatim, without that you make it hard for helpers to give an intelligible or a remotely related response to your inquiry.

My wild guess was you didn't have a driver installed before attempting the update, maybe video or something else.

Error 0x80072F89 is specific to older versions of IE where the related box to uncheck for server certificate validation in Advanced tab of Internet Options doesn't work as shown. It does work in IE 5.50 SP2 and IE 6.00 SP1 so one solution is to upgrade your IE to either of those two versions first whereupon the WinUP site will start working right for you again.

BUT I recently saw on another board that several updates are not downloading from the Windows Update Catalog site as they used to or should. Some do, some don't. I suspect it's a temporary thing and the problem will pass given enough time. Although official support for 98 ends the 11th of this month, the WinUP site is expected to work for 98 for some time yet. They just won't have any new updates for us there. I suspect that they will then move 98 updates to the corporate page which is quite similar to this 95 page.

It was because I was using Internet explorer 5 and I had thought Internet Explorer SP1 was just for xp(I was wrong) I had an older explorer installer (back when explorer 6 first came out) but now the updates are working(most of them). And it may not be the end of the world GX1 Man but I take pride in my computer and I plan on keeping 98SE until this computer dies, sure it can run xp but it wouldn't be as fast as it is on 98 and some programs won't work on xp (and dare I say some sentimental attachment). When Microsoft said it was ending support I wasn't going to risk waiting to see if the updates were still available after the 11th. Back in 2003 they talked about a cd with all the updates but I doubt that will happen, especially with vista on the way. (now if xp wasn't around and I'd have to choose windows ME then it might be the end of the world..

Thanks for the links melee5, I know I was missing DCOM98 & Visual Basic 6.0 SP6.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not knocking Win98. I use it on two machines and have no complaints. I have had issues with the updates which were always resolved with adding the IE SP1 update. Then the update site works perfectly. (Same for ME.)

In fact MS did ussue an Updates CD (free) in 2003 but it was only available for a limited time. Can't remember exactly but I think it was for less than 1 year.

Check around, you might find someone who's got one you can copy, although it only takes you up to October 2003 but thats at least 25 Updates under your belt and they run in automatically.
