i have a PII 333 comp running win 98.
when playing halflife i pressed the 'recall' button on my monitor (17 inch) and it seemed to restore it to factory settings. But it reduced the screen size to about 15 inches leaving a black border of about an inch on each side.
i haven't been able to get rid of it - the border is there on the desktop as well as being in halflife (it is not there on boot up - win98 logo)i have tried xpanding the screen in display properties and managed to fix the prob, but when i enter halflife the borders are still there and when i leave, the desktop has borders again.
it isn't a prob with the game either - when i fix the borders then save changes and restart the computer the borders are there again.
i have reinstalled the monitor drivers, deleted them and allowed windows to select different drivers, nothing works.plez help im thinking of using the factory settings disk but that would wipe all my files (can't make back ups- too large)
thx
jonny

I was helping this person for one hour today over this issue and couldn't resolve it so I sent him here to see if you all could help.
Thanks
Kenny

What make & model is the Vid Card & Monitor?
Also what resolution is it set at? I use 800 X 600 for example.

Is the Vid Card & Monitor listed on the Display Properties Panel Settings Tab under the word: Display:?
Rt clk on desktop, then choose properties to launch panel.

PS
If everything is working ok except for the black borders, then adjust the width & height controls on the monitor itself.

We tried to adjust it already using the monitor itself but no luck i had him replace the driver and had him adjust settings in display but the samething occurs maybe a monitor going bad?

If this occurred within the last 4 day's then try replacing the registry with a backup copy prior to the event.
type: scanreg/restore at the dos prompt.
