I have word perfect version 6.1 (my favorite word processor). I like the old buttons and many features of it but what I'd like to be able to change is the fact that the program does not recognize file names that are longer than 8 characters but rather gives them the ~ character at the end. Is there a file utility somewhere (nonags e.g.) out there that I can download to correct this problem? I have other word processors (but not MS Word) I can use but I prefer using 1000 times over word perfect. Can someone suggest a solution to this problem?

wpwin 6.1 is built on windows 3.1 arcitecture and uses a 3.1 file system, it can't read the long file names that were implimented with win95. Microsoft's way to allow older DOS and windows applications read long file names in 8.3 format is to have the "~" at the end. You could name it something under 8 characters in wpwin and then in Explorer change it to a long file name. Or live with the 8 characters

sorry anil your utility just won't cut it this time. i run word perfect 8.0 myself. tried word perfect 2000. isn't as good. And it still doesn't give the option of a file name longer than 8 characters. i have used 6.0/6.1/8.0 and 2000. None give this option. and neither do the upgrade patches availible from Correl.com. So anil I don't think I have to tell you what your utility is good for do I? And to everyone else out there if you know a trick around this, I'd sure be interested too.
